Major General (Retd) Janaka Walgama RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, psc was the Military Adviser to the Sri Lanka's Permanent Representation to the United Nations at New York. [1] [2]

Early life and education

Janaka received his education from Nalanda College Colombo. Contemporaries of Janaka at Nalanda are the present Air Chief, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathi, Former Air Chief Air Chief Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala, Major General Milinda Peiris, Major General Ubaya Madawela, Consultant Neurologist Udaya Ranawaka & former Sri Lanka test cricketer Sanath Kaluperuma. [3]

Army career

During the war times he was the General Officer Commanding 22 Division in Trincomalee and Commander for 65 Division in Thunukkai (Kilinochchi).

Prior to the present appointment he held the appointments as the Military Secretary of the Army, Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Director General Operations at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff. He was the General Officer Commanding 51 Division in Jaffna and Director General of Defence Intelligence also at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff earlier. [4]

He has also been the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Military Academy at Diyatalawa thus been one rare Officer to hold both appointments as the Commandant of the Military Academy and the Staff College respectively. He has served as the Commander Security Forces-East. He was also the former Colonel Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters.

The Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) is a combat support arm of the Sri Lanka Army which provides military engineering. It is made up of ten regular regiments and one volunteer regiment. Headquartered at Panagoda Cantonment, it is headed by the Centre Commandant.

Sri Lanka Signals Corps Military unit

The Sri Lanka Signals Corps (SLSC) is a combat support corps of the Sri Lanka Army, responsible for providing military communications, information technology and electronic warfare support. The corps is made up of a signals brigade, ten regular regiments and one volunteer regiment. It is responsible for installing, maintaining and operating all types of telecommunications equipment and information systems. It is headquartered at the Panagoda Cantonment.

Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment Military unit

The Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) is an infantry regiment of the Sri Lanka Army; it is the second oldest infantry regiment in the army. It is made up of seven regular battalions, five volunteer battalions and a headquarters battalion at the Ambepussa Camp.

Sri Lanka Military Academy Academy of Sri Lanka Army in Diyatalawa, Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Military Academy, commonly known simply as Diyatalawa, is the Sri Lanka Army's training centre where officer cadets are trained for getting commission. It is located in the garrison town of Diyatalawa in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. All Sri Lanka Army officer cadets, including army cadets of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, are trained at SLMA. Although not a university, SLMA is affiliated to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University to provide its cadets of regular long course a degree in military studies.

Major General Janaka Perera, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, VSP, rcds, psc, CR was a Sri Lankan General and politician. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and is considered one of the most distinguished generals in Sri Lankan history. After retiring from the army he served as a Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to Indonesia. He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council until he and his wife were killed on 6 October 2008 by a suicide bomber. The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Major General M.C. Mendaka. P. Samarasinghe, RWP, RSP, USP, ndc, psc, SLE was a Sri Lankan general and former Chief of Staff, Sri Lanka Army and also the former Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna; he was also the General Officer Commanding, 22 Division.

Milinda Peiris Sri Lankan senior army officer

Major General (retd) Milinda Peiris RWP RSP USP VSV LOM ndc psc was the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. Major General Milinda was appointed as Vice Chancellor (VC) of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on January 16, 2020 for second occasion. Milinda's previous tenure as Vice Chancellor of KDU from December 2008 to February 2016.

Ubaya Madawela Sri Lankan senior army officer

Major General Ubaya Medawela RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, psc, MSc was a Sri Lankan senior army officer; he was the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

Major General Gemunu Kulatunge, RSP, USP, ndc, psc (1941-2003) was a Sri Lankan senior army officer, who was the former Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

Major General K.A.D. Amal Karunasekara, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, ndu, psc was a senior Sri Lankan army officer and 51st Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. Major General (Rtd) Karunasekara is also the first Commandant of the National Defence College, Sri Lanka.

Air Chief Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, MPhil, MSc in Mgt, FIM(SL) National Defence College, India, psc is a retired air officer and a former commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force. He has also held the position of Chief of the Air Staff and after his retirement on 12 September 2016, was appointed the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Afghanistan, a position he holds currently.

Major General Piyal Abeysekera, USP was a Sri Lankan senior army officer and the former Deputy Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army.

Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) has been the title of the head of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. The post is held by a regular officer of the rank of major general and is the fourth senior position in the army. Commandant is in charge of the Volunteer Force Headquarters and is assisted by a deputy commandant.

Md Jubayer Salehin SUP, ndu, psc is a Major General of the Bangladesh Army and incumbent Engineer-in-Chief at the Bangladesh Army. Earlier, he was Commandant of Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) since 24 January 2021. Prior to Join DSCSC, Salehin commanded 17th Infantry Division as its General Officer Commanding and, served Sylhet Area as its Area Commander.

Major General D G S Senarath Yapa RWP, RSP, ndu is a senior Sri Lanka Army officer. He is the 49th Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force. Prior to join SLVF, he served as the Commander of Security Forces (West) and (Jaffna). Before that, he was General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 57 and 14 Infantry Divisions.
