Jane Victoria Atkinson CBE FREng is Executive Director of Engineering and Automation at Bilfinger UK. [1]

Education

Atkinson studied chemical engineering at Loughborough University, [2] [3] and in 2011 she received an honorary doctorate in business administration from Teesside University. [2]

Career

Her career began as a sponsored engineering student with British Steel in 1990. [3] On completion of her first degree she worked as a technical advisor at the Teesside blast furnace before moving into operations, becoming the first woman in the world to manage a blast furnace in 2004 – the Corus cast house at Redcar. [1] [3] She was later the second woman in the world to manage a coke oven. [1] [3]

During her time in the steel industry she managed many major production units and spent five years with the company in Alabama in the USA. [1] [4]

She later became Senior Vice President Utilities Operations at SembCorp Utilities UK. [5] Moving to Cape plc in 2014 [2] she was eventually responsible for its merger with Hertel and NSG to create Altrad. [1] She moved to Bilfinger in 2019. [1]

Honours

The CBI honoured her as Britain’s top female engineer in 2007 and in 2010 she became the youngest woman Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. [1] [6] In 2019 she was recognised as the first of the 100 top women leaders in engineering in the UK. [7] [8] She is also a Fellow of IChemE and has chartered and designated European Engineer status. [4]

She was President of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2014 to 2019, the Academy's first female president.

Verena Winifred Holmes was an English mechanical engineer and multi-field inventor, the first woman member elected to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (1924) and the Institution of Locomotive Engineers (1931), and was a strong supporter of women in engineering. She was one of the early members of the Women's Engineering Society, and its president in 1931. She was the first practising engineer to serve as president of the society.

Loughborough Lightning is an English netball team based at Loughborough University. Their senior team plays in the Netball Superleague. In 2005–06 they were founder members of the league. They also enter under-19 and under-21 teams in the National Performance League. Using the name Loughborough Students, Loughborough University also enter teams in intervarsity leagues organised by British Universities and Colleges Sport. Together with the women's cricket team and the women's rugby union team, the netball team is one of three women's sports teams based at Loughborough University that use the Loughborough Lightning name.

Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Ltd was an English ironmaking and mining company founded in 1864, based on the partnership since 1840 of its two founders, Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan. The firm drove the dramatic growth of Middlesbrough and the production of coal and iron in the north-east of England in the 19th century. The two founding partners had an exceptionally close working relationship which lasted until Vaughan's death.

Dame Helen Valerie Atkinson is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Cranfield University's School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing. She was previously Head of the University of Leicester's Department of Engineering and later Leicester's Graduate Dean. In 2010, she was designated one of the UKRC's Women of Outstanding Achievement and featured in the Women of Outstanding Achievement Photographic Exhibition. She was elected a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007, was a vice-president of the Academy from 2012 to 2014 and was elected to its Trustee Board in 2014.

Sarah Victoria Hainsworth is Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Bath. Previously she was Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Aston University, Professor of Materials and Forensic Engineering, and Head of the Department of Engineering, at the University of Leicester.

In 2016 the Women's Engineering Society (WES), in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph, produced an inaugural list of the United Kingdom's Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering, which was published on National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2016. The event was so successful it became an annual celebration. The list was instigated by Dawn Bonfield MBE, then Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society. In 2019, WES ended its collaboration with the Daily Telegraph and started a new collaboration with The Guardian newspaper.

Dame Dawn Elizabeth Childs is a British engineer who has moved between several engineering disciplines including mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering and civil engineering. She has been the first woman engineer in several posts in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the first female head of engineering at a major international airport. Childs has a track record of developing women within her organisation as well as working to bring more women and girls into the discipline. Childs is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Pure Data Centre Group (Operations) Ltd, following her role as UK Change Director at National Grid plc.

Rachel Clare Thomson is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Pro Vice Chancellor of Teaching at Loughborough University. She is known for her expertise in measuring and predicting the behaviour of materials for high temperature power generation, as well as the development of higher education and research programmes.

The Department of Materials is responsible for the teaching and research in materials science and engineering at Imperial College London, occupying the Royal School of Mines and Bessemer buildings on the South Kensington campus. It can trace its origins back to the metallurgy department of the Government School of Mines and Science applied to the Arts, founded in 1851.

The Suffrage Science award is a prize for women in science, engineering and computing founded in 2011, on the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day by the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS). There are three categories of award:

  2. engineering and physical sciences
  3. mathematics and computing.
