The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). For the 2023–24 season, 31 of the 32 NHL teams have official affiliations with an AHL team, with only the Carolina Hurricanes having no such affiliation. When NHL teams do not have an AHL affiliate, players are assigned to AHL teams affiliated with other NHL franchises. Twenty-six AHL teams are located across the United States whereas the remaining six are situated in Canada. The league offices are located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and its current president is Scott Howson.
The International Hockey League (IHL) was a minor professional ice hockey league in the United States and Canada that operated from 1945 to 2001. The IHL served as the National Hockey League's alternate farm system to the American Hockey League (AHL). After 56 years of operation, financial instability led to the league's demise. The final Shaugnessy playoffs faced second place Grand Rapids against third place Racine in a Best of Seven Series.

The Rock River Jets were an American semi-professional ice hockey team located in Rockford, Illinois. The team was in operation for parts of two seasons in the Continental Hockey League. Due to low attendance, the Janesville Jets moved to Rockford, Illinois in January of 1982 and finished out the year as the Rock River Jets. The team returned for the following year but their financial situation had not improved. Rock River lost each of its first six games that year by a combined total of 11 to 76 and then withdrew from the league.
