Janet Achieng Otieno (born 24 December 1977) popularly known as Janet Otieno, [1] is a singer and songwriter of gospel music [2] [3] from Kenya. She was the winner of Mwafaka Awards [4] and nominated at Groove Awards for "Collaboration of the year" in 2014 for the song "Napokea Kwako" which featured Christina Shusho from Tanzania. [5]

Early life and career

Janet gained interest in music in 2010 when she started singing in church. She later released her first song, "Napokea Kwako", which featured Tanzanian gospel singer Christina Shusho, in 2013. The song gained her much attention and fame and in 2014, she was awarded for "Collaboration of the year for the song "Napokea Kwako" by Mwafaka Awards. She later released other songs such as Mtafute, Ni Wewe, Nijaze, [6] [7] Nitangoja, [8] Tulia, [9] Amka Ucheze, More of you,  Heshima and Uniongoze. [10] In 2014 she was nominated for Female artist of the year, Collaboration of the year and Song of the year by Groove Awards and in 2018 she was nominated as the Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music at Afrima Awards. [11]

Personal life

Born 24 December 1977, Janet Achieng Otieno is the second born in a family of six children. Janet is married to Alfred Otieno whom she met while singing in redeemed gospel church; the couple married in 1996. [18] [19] [20] [21]

Odi pop is a Kenyan music style which involves localized hip hop and draws influences from reggae and Dancehall music to build on an African Rhythm base performed in sing-along rap in heavy Kiswahili/Sheng language. There are several sub-genres stemming from this umbrella term including Gengeton, Dabonge, Debe and others. Major Nameye Khadija popularly known with his stage name Mejja is a Kenyan Genge artist. He was signed to Calif Records where he released multiple collaborations. His single "Jana Kuliendaje" won him an award at Kenya's Chaguo la Teeni in 2008.

Riverwood Academy Awards is an annual Kenyan film award founded by Mwaniki Mageria. It was formed with a goal to recognize and celebrate local productions ,low budget film making and nurture talent by creating opportunities for training players in the industry on how to tell Kenyan stories in a Kenyan way. Riverwood Academy Awards started on 17 March 2014. Nyamari Ongegu, known professionally as Nyashinski, is a Kenyan rapper singer and songwriter. He is a co-founding member of the hip-hop trio Kleptomaniax before successfully launching his solo career during the 2010s.
