Janet Toro

Janet Toro (born in Osorno, Chile, August 24, 1963) is a performance artist based in Chile and Germany whose work has centered around an anti-establishment message and the illumination of the social injustices that resulted from the Pinochet dictatorship. [1] She is most well known for her work, El cuerpo de la memoria (The body of memory), where she performed 90 actions over 44 days at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago, Chile. Shortly after this, she moved to Germany in 1999, where she continued her career as a performance artist before moving back to Chile in 2014. [2]

Janet Toro studied fine art at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago and was affiliated with the artist activist group, Agrupación de Plásticos Jóvenes. [3] During the time Chile was under the military dictatorship, Toro stopped painting to pursue activist and performance art. The Chilean group, Colectivo de Acciones de Art (CADA) served as inspiration as Toro created more anti-dictatorial work. Shortly after her return to Chile in 2014, she produced the work In Situ at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago. This work addressed the loss of the Mapuche culture in contemporary Chile. [4] [5] [6] [7]

Carlota Eugenia Rosenfeld Villarreal, known as Lotty Rosenfeld, was an interdisciplinary artist based in Santiago, Chile. She was born in Santiago, Chile, and was active during the late 1970s during the time of the Chilean military coup d'état. She carried out public art interventions in urban areas, often manipulating traffic signs in order to challenge viewers to rethink notions of public space and political agency. Luz Donoso Puelma, also known as Luz Donoso, was a Chilean graphic artist, muralist, political activist, and teacher. Beginning in the mid 1960s, Donoso was one of the most prominent participants in the muralist movement that supported Salvador Allende’s presidential campaign. In the first months of the dictatorship she was dismissed from her teaching position at the University of Chile, like many of her colleagues, and shortly after co-founded an artist run work space and forum, Taller de Artes Visuales (TAV).

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Negro Matapacos</span> Chilean dog famous for protest involvement

Negro Matapacos was a Chilean black dog that acquired fame due to his participation in the street protests that took place in Santiago, Chile, in 2011. He later became a symbol in the 2019–2020 Chilean protests as a sort of resistance to police brutality and to represent the fight for dignity. He has had graffiti and statues made in his honor throughout the country and even outside of Chile, such as in the Decolonize This Place subway protests in New York City in 2019. He was notable for his black fur and the red handkerchief that was tied around his neck, although he also had a blue and a white handkerchief that his caregiver also put on him.

Racism in Chile encompasses any type of racial or ethnic discrimination by a group of inhabitants or organizations of that country against groups from other nations or the same nation. The origins of Chilean racism, and that of other Latin American nations, can be traced back to 16th century colonialism under the rule of the Spanish Empire. In the establishment of imperial rule, Native Americans experienced extermination, slavery and forced miscegenation.

Carlos Francisco Leppe Arroyo was notable as a Chilean performance artist. Carlos Leppe's artistic career began with conventional plastic media, but he is recognised as a major exponent, and the originator, of performance art in Chile. The practice of performance art is also known in Chile as 'art actions'. Leppe used his own body in an artistic practice born of the tension between personal self-identity and the cultural expectations which regulate social behaviour. He was a key figure in the neo-avant-garde ‘Advanced Scene’, which included—among others—the artists Carlos Altamirano, Juan Castillo, Juan Domingo Dávila, Alfredo Jaar and Lotty Rosenfeld, and the writers Diamela Eltit and Raúl Zurita.

El derecho de vivir en paz is the sixth official single released by Chilean singer-songwriter Víctor Jara as a solo artist. It was written by Jara in 1969, as he worked in the "Vietrock" play by Megan Terry. The song was released in 1971 by the Jota Jota label and was included in the El derecho de vivir en paz album, released later that year.
