Jani Tewelde Weldegaber (born 1 October 1990) is an Eritrean cyclist. [3] Tewelde is a two time African gold medal winner of the Team time trial.

Personal life

Tewelde got his first bicycle, a Mountain bike, from his father when he got a better grade in school than his sister in 2005. Later in 2007 he got his first Road bike. [4]

Career

At the 2011 Tour of Eritrea Tewelde held the leaders jersey after Stage 3 with many top 10 placing on stages he eventually finished third overall. [5] Later in the year he was part of the Eritrean team that won the Team time trial gold medal at the African Continental Road Cycling Championships. [6]

At the Tour of Eritrea in 2012 Tewelde won the first stage becoming the first rider from a non-Eritrean team to wear the leaders jersey. [7] At the end of the season he was ranked the 12th equal best cyclist in Africa. [8] At the end of the 2012 road season Tewelde raced in the Amashova Durban Classic finishing second. [9] [10] In November he was once again chosen to represent Eritrea at the African Continental Road Cycling Championships where he rode in the TTT helping Eritrea to win the event for the third year in a row. [11]

In May 2013 Tewelde injured his knee meaning he could not race until the following month at the GP Industria & Artigianato di Larciano. [12]

Tewelde entered his third season with MTN–Qhubeka in 2014. [13] As part of MTN–Qhubeka, Twelde was one of six professional riders in the world from Eritrea. [14] Up from five the year previously. [15]

Tsgabu Gebremaryam Grmay is an Ethiopian professional road cyclist from Tigray, who rides for UCI WorldTeam Team Jayco–AlUla. He is a three time national road race champion, six time national time trial champion, and one time African time trial champion. Tsgabu became the first Ethiopian professional cyclist when he joined MTN–Qhubeka in 2012.
