Club career

Sheffield Wednesday

Thornton joined Sheffield Wednesday at U8s level from his local side Hoyland Town Magpies, moving up the ranks and captaining the U18s team. [4] In March 2024, Thornton and team mate Bruno Fernandes were both nominated for the February LFE Goal of the Month, with Thornton an eye-catching strike from range earned the academy side a point away at Burnley in a 1-1 draw. [5] He signed his first proffesional contract with the club on 3 July 2024. [6] After a summer of turmoil, he joined the first team ahead of the 2025–26 season. [7] On the 13 August 2025, Thornton would make his proffesional debut in the EFL Cup against Bolton Wanderers, where a young Owls side would draw 3–3 and eventually win on penalties against the League One side – Thornton would play the full 90 minutes. [8] He would again start in the following round against Leeds United where again he played the full 90 minutes in another penalty shootout win, where his half volley was spilled by goalkeeper Karl Darlow which led to the goal. [9] At the start of September, manager Henrik Pedersen moved Thornton, alongside team mates Reece Johnson, Ernie Weaver and goalkeeper Logan Stretch into the first team dressing room. [10] He made his senior league debut, coming off the bench in the 0–5 defeat against Coventry City replacing Svante Ingelsson. [11]
