Jason Archer (born July 31, 1973) is an American artist living in Austin, Texas. He is the creator of a variety artworks as a director, animator, painter, and muralist both collaborative and solo. His work includes political satire and Texas inspired characters including Jesus Cornbread & the Alcoholics and Stray of the Dead. Archer’s early career in animation earned him a Grammy and an MTV Video of the Year Award for directing and animating "Frijolero", a music video for the Mexican rock band Molotov. [1] Currently, Archer co-owns Show Goat Mural Works, a company that installs large scale murals such as Daniel Johnston’s ‘Love is the Question. Love is the Answer’ and his very own ‘Conservatorium of Infinite Wisdom, Sustenance and Guidance.’ Archer has participated in numerous art shows, exhibitions and events ranging from SXSW, East Austin Studio Tour and the inaugural Pop Austin International Art Show.

Life and career

Early life

Early Life Jason was born in Longview, Texas, to parents Charles and Lanell. He is the youngest of two children with an older sister, Melissa.

Jason earned a degree in communications from the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied conceptual thinking within the Creative Sequence, a program within the Advertising school directed specifically for art directors and copywriters. [2] He graduated in 1996, and moved to New York with his design portfolio to begin a career as an Art Director.

Career in Animation

Jason exited his advertising career and began working as an animator on Richard Linklater’s animated feature, Waking Life (2001). Afterward, he began collaborating with Paul Beck, [3] directing and animating music videos for David Byrne, Molotov and Juanes. In 2003, Jason and Paul earned a Latin Grammy for Best Music Video and an MTV Video of the Year Award for directing Molotov’s "Frijolero". Jason and Paul [4] also completed a trilogy of animated political satires including the "Homeland Hodown" featured on "The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time", a Radiohead DVD. Jason returned to the film industry as Head of Animation on A Scanner Darkly (2006), based on a novel of the same name by Philip K Dick. In 2011, he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Art Direction and Design for animation work featured in the documentary "The Eyes of Me." [5]

Career in Contemporary Art

In April 2011, Archer participated in the Texas Biennial, presenting a collection of hand pulled screen prints, photographs, video and animations called Jesus Cornbread and the Alcoholics at Texas State University. [6] Following this presentation, he was offered a teaching position at Texas State University where he taught Digital Animation in the School of Art and Design from Fall 2011— Fall 2014. [7]

In September 2011, Archer’s work was featured on an outdoor mural at 407 S. Colorado Street in Austin, TX. The 30 x 10 foot painting was installed over 48 hours by Archer and a small production team, and captured by time lapse cameras. The Installation of Archer’s piece titled, "Serape Sunset" marked the inauguration of an ongoing outdoor mural project called Frank Public Art which has showcased large scale outdoor installations by noteworthy American artists, including Jeremy Fish and Michael Seiben.[9]

In October 2011, Archer presented a new collection of solo work, in Marfa, TX. The exhibition was held on Highland Avenue in a space formerly occupied by actor Randy Quiad and his wife Evie.[10] "The Marfa Mashup" depicts fictitious encounters between Hollywood’s legendary West Texas characters and their commentary on the contemporary West Texas landscape. [8] The exhibit featured limited edition hand pulled screen prints, signed and numbered on archival deckle-edged cotton paper[11]

Other solo work includes Camp Capitol Hill, a collection of hand pulled screen prints depicting presidential candidates as children enrolled in summer camp, with US forefathers playing roles as youth counselor. [9] Camp Capitol Hill debuted in Oct 2012 during Chinati Weekend in Marfa, Texas [13] and presented later in Austin, Texas during the 2013 EAST Austin Studio Tour.[14]

In February 2012, Archer teamed up with Austin-based designer, Josh "Row" Robertson, to form Show Goat Mural Works, a design and branding firm specializing in outdoor mural installations. To date, Show Goat Mural Works has received commissions for custom art work from brands such as Fender Guitars, Converse, Topo Chico, Cuvee Coffee, Antone’s and Alamo Drafthouse. [15]

In October 2014, Archer was invited to participate in POP Austin [10] International Art Show, an art exhibit and interactive event in Austin, TX. Pop Austin brought together both emerging and renowned contemporary artists from around the world such as Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami and Arno Elias.[16] Archer contributed animation and installed multiple large scale murals for the POP Austin Event, including his very own "Conservatorium of Infinite Wisdom Sustenance and Guidance".

Archer's influences include Helmut Newton, Bugs Bunny and Texas.[17]

Wesley Meyer Archer is an American television animation director. He was one of the original three animators on The Simpsons, Tracey Ullman shorts, and subsequently directed a number of The Simpsons episodes before becoming supervising director at King of the Hill. A few years later he left King of the Hill to direct for Futurama, before eventually returning to King of the Hill. Wes continued to supervise the direction of King of the Hill until the final season. He acted as a consulting director for the last season of King of the Hill, as he joined The Goode Family as supervising director. Archer's college animation film, "Jac Mac and Rad Boy, Go!" has long been a cult classic after receiving repeated airplay on USA Network's Night Flight in the 1980s. He studied at the Film Graphics/Experimental Animation Program at CalArts. He is currently the supervising director on Rick and Morty.

<i>Archer</i> (2009 TV series) American animated television series

Archer is an American adult animated sitcom created by Adam Reed for the basic cable network FX. It follows the exploits of the title character, a dysfunctional, irreverent secret agent and seven of his colleagues—domineering boss/mother Malory Archer, professional Lana Kane, mild-mannered Cyril Figgis, delusional, psychotic Cheryl Tunt, gossipy Pam Poovey, openly gay Ray Gillette and bizarre, mysterious Dr. Algernop Krieger. The premise of Archer evolves in subsequent seasons as the show experiments with the standard setup of an anthology, each with self-contained arcs, new settings, a disparate set of personae for each character, even distinct humor. Prada Marfa is a permanent sculptural art installation by artists Elmgreen and Dragset, located 1.4 miles (2.3 km) northwest of Valentine, Texas, just off U.S. Highway 90 (US 90), and about 26 miles (42 km) northwest of the city of Marfa. Tracie Laymon is a screenwriter, producer and film director. Laymon was raised in Houston, Texas, and studied film at the University of Texas at Austin. She began her film career with work in the Texas area, and several of her music videos and short films were recognized with film festival awards. She served in film production capacities in multiple movies, including Matchstick Men in 2003 and The Alamo in 2004. Laymon moved to California in 2005, and continued film production work there, serving as production assistant on films The Ringer in 2005 and Blades of Glory in 2007. Her short film Inside premiered in 2009 at the Milan International Film Festival in Milan, Italy, and won the award in "Best Short Film" from the Women's Image Network. She also directed the first ever half-hour comedy for the internet entitled "Goodnight Burbank", which premiered on Hulu.com in April 2011 and was personally acquired by Mark Cuban that same day. The shows then aired on Cuban's HDNet in the fall of 2011. Jason Villegas American artist

Jason Villegas is currently a New York City based contemporary artist. He has exhibited across the United States and internationally. Villegas' work utilizes a wide spectrum of mediums including sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, textile, video and performance. Jason Archer and Paul Beck are a team of American music video directors, and animators. They specialize in the animation rotoscoping technique which have been used on their work for the films Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. Archer and Beck also directed music videos for several performers including David Byrne, Juanes and Molotov. The duo won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2003 for "Frijolero".

Matt Magee is an American contemporary artist who is best known for his minimal abstract geometric paintings, sculptures, prints, assemblages, murals and photographs. He was born in Paris, France in 1961 and moved from there to Tripoli, Libya and then to London. He moved to Brooklyn in 1984 to attend Pratt Institute for an MFA after completing a BA in Art History at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. He maintained a studio on New York City until 2012 and currently lives in Phoenix, AZ.

Rob Kaz

Rob Kaz (Kaczmarczyk) is an American artist known for his original oil paintings that reflect a "whimsical animated style." Based in Orlando, Florida, he did not attend art school, but studied criminal justice at the University of Central Florida and graduated in 2001. He was hired by an animation studio when he could not find a job in criminal justice. After three jobs in boutique studios, he was hired by video game company Electronic Arts. In 2008 he left EA and began to sell his own fine art pieces. He had his first show in October 2008. Kaz is licensed to paint Disney and Star Wars based paintings. Star Wars creator George Lucas purchased some of Kaz's original Star Wars paintings. His artwork was on display at a gallery in Austin, Texas which featured Muppet-themed artworks.
