Jason Wilsher-Mills is a digital artist from Wakefield West Yorkshire. He now lives in Sleaford in Lincolnshire, England. His work uses sculpture, augmented reality, 3D Printing, [1] murals, cinematography, portraiture and painting. In 2015, he was featured at the Museum of Islamic art in Doha, Qatar, and in 2020 he received the Adam Reynolds Award. [2]
Wilsher-Mills has chronic polyneuropathy, and chronic fatigue syndrome which he has lived with since the age of eleven, resulting in hospitalisation. These conditions affect his mobility and left him paralysed from the neck down for five years. The polyneuropathy is progressive, also affecting his immune system, which forced him to self-isolate during the COVID-19 pandemic. His tendons have also been damaged, which makes drawing difficult. [3] Before the Covid outbreak, he was set to show his work at the Tate Art Museum. [4]
When he was twelve, his brother took him to see Jaws on a weekend release from the hospital. They were refused entry to the cinema, as the manager deemed Mills a "fire-hazard", due to his wheelchair. Prior to 1995, access to public places was not legally guaranteed to disabled people. Mills recalls this is the first time he was made to feel different. He would later create two banners in 2015, for the Houses of Parliament. One commemorated the Disability Discrimination Act: [5] he specifically requested this commission as he himself has lived through the effects of the Act and has seen the real life changes. While the other banner marked 800 years since Magna Carta. [6]
Mills compares his art to the Beano comic strip and Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake . The exhibitions he creates are often humorous and political in nature, and he prefers positivity to anger. His sculptural work often includes interactive AR elements, and are sometimes inflatable. An iPad is his primary tool, which he started using after reading an article on painter David Hockney's usage. [7] The tablet is portable and the high definition allows him to scale up his artworks. This has allowed Mills to regain some of his freedom. He has a free augmented reality app, Jason Residential, available to download from Google Play. [8]
Mills has also worked for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, a rugby team based in based in West Yorkshire, for a year long project. The two-hundred foot mural included portraits of star players and utilised 3000 school children's drawings of themselves. It was installed around the stand of the stadium. His father and he would watch rugby together when he was a child and he has stated that it was the "closest time I ever spent with him". The piece, which is dedicated to his father, is designed to be a time capsule, and Mills hopes that the children featured will one day bring their own children to see it. [9]
In 2021, he created a statue called 'I Am Argonaut', for the Folkestone Triennial, an art festival held in Kent. The sculpture was placed opposite a statue of William Harvey, the local physician who, in 1628, discovered how the heart circulates blood around the body. 'I Am Argonaut' is depicted pointing at a hole in its chest, where the heart should be located, laughing; the statue of Harvey holds a disembodied heart. The piece was produced in conjunction with Shape Arts. [10]
Mills created other Argonaut installations as part of an Arts Council England funded project 'Jason & his Argonauts on Tour' [11] which toured the United Kingdom. The centrepiece was the 'Changing Places Argonaut', a 3.5 metre inflatable which "relates people's stories from the Changing Places movement". [12] In 2022 the People's History Museum in Manchester, England exhibited 'The Manchester Argonaut', a sculpture about "activism and the rights of disabled people". [13]
Folkestone is a port town on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England. The town lies on the southern edge of the North Downs at a valley between two cliffs. It was an important harbour, shipping port, and fashionable coastal resort for most of the 19th and mid-20th centuries.
Edward Onslow Ford was an English sculptor. Much of Ford's early success came with portrait heads or busts. These were considered extremely refined, showing his subjects at their best and led to him receiving a number of commissions for public monuments and statues, both in Britain and overseas. Ford also produced a number of bronze statuettes of free-standing figures loosely drawn from mythology or of allegorical subjects. These 'ideal' figures became characteristic of the New Sculpture movement that developed in Britain from about 1880 and of which Ford was a leading exponent.
Carl Milles was a Swedish sculptor. He was married to artist Olga Milles and brother to Ruth Milles and half-brother to the architect Evert Milles. Carl Milles sculpted the Gustaf Vasa statue at the Stockholm Nordic Museum, the Poseidon statue in Gothenburg, the Orpheus group outside the Stockholm Concert Hall, and the Fountain of Faith in Falls Church, Virginia. His home near Stockholm, Millesgården, became his resting place and is now a museum.

Tate Britain, known from 1897 to 1932 as the National Gallery of British Art and from 1932 to 2000 as the Tate Gallery, is an art museum on Millbank in the City of Westminster in London, England. It is part of the Tate network of galleries in England, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. The museum had 525,144 visitors in 2021, an increase of 34 percent from 2020 but still well below pre- COVID-19 pandemic levels. In 2021 it ranked 50th on the list of most-visited art museums in the world.
Jeffrey Lynn Koons is an American artist recognized for his work dealing with popular culture and his sculptures depicting everyday objects, including balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces. He lives and works in both New York City and his hometown of York, Pennsylvania. His works have sold for substantial sums, including at least two record auction prices for a work by a living artist: US$58.4 million for Balloon Dog (Orange) in 2013 and US$91.1 million for Rabbit in 2019.
The Cancún Underwater Museum is a non-profit organization based in Cancún, Mexico devoted to the art of conservation. The museum has a total of 500 sculptures, by a series of international and local sculptors, with three different galleries submerged between three and six meters deep in the ocean at the Cancún National Marine Park. The museum was thought up by Marine Park Director Jaime González Cano, with the objective of saving the nearby coral reefs by providing an alternative destination for divers. It was started in 2009 and officially opened in November 2010.
Hew Donald Joseph Locke is a British sculptor and contemporary visual artist based in Brixton, London. In 2000 he won a Paul Hamlyn Award and the EASTinternational Award. He grew up in Guyana, but lived most of his adult life in London.
Jason deCaires Taylor is a British sculptor and creator of the world's first underwater sculpture park – the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park – and underwater museum – Cancún Underwater Museum (MUSA). He is best known for installing site-specific underwater sculptures that develop naturally into artificial coral reefs, which local communities and marine life depend on. Taylor integrates his skills as a sculptor, marine conservationist, underwater photographer and scuba diving instructor into each of his projects. By using a fusion of Land Art traditions and subtly integrating aspects of street art, Taylor produces dynamic sculptural works that are installed on the ocean floor to encourage marine life, to promote ocean conservation and to highlight the current climate crisis.
Ryan Gander is a British artist. Since 2003, Gander has produced a body of artworks in different forms, ranging from sculpture, apparel, writing, architecture, painting, typefaces, publications, and performance. Additionally, Gander curates exhibitions, has worked as an educator at art institutions and universities, and has written and presented television programmes on and about contemporary art and culture for the BBC.
Albert Bruce-Joy was an Irish sculptor working in England. His original surname was Joy but he became known under his hyphenated name Bruce-Joy later in life. He was the brother of the painter George W. Joy.
Pat Oleszko is an American visual and performing artist. Oleszko has performed at major New York institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA P.S. 1, and P.S. 122. In 1990, the artist was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Foundation fellowship.

Balloon Dog is a series of sculptures by the American artist Jeff Koons. There are different versions of this sculpture, made between 1994 and 2000, with each having a different color: blue, magenta, yellow, orange and red. All versions of the sculpture are made of stainless steel, using different coatings to produce the different colors.
Ana Rajčević is a Serbian artist who is based in Boston and Berlin. She works at the intersection of art, design, and technology, and is known for her 'hybrid prosthetics', or what she terms ‘chimeric embodiments’ works—non-anthropomorphic, animal inspired prosthetics and wearables that augment human physicality. Rajčević holds a PhD in Artistic Research from the art and science department at University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and is also a visiting lecturer at UAL-University of the Arts, London. Starting in 2024, she joined Hugh Herr's MIT Biomechatronics group at the MIT Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, as a Research Scientist. The Independent voted her one of the most promising artists from the University of the Arts in London in 2012.
