Jatin Sarker (born 25 August 1935) [1] is a Bengali intellectual, researcher and biographer of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2008 for research and essays and Independence Day Award in 2010 for education. [2] [3] As of September 2021, he has published 35 books. [4]
Sarker was born on 25 August 1935 in Chandapara village, Kendua Upazila of Netrokona of the-then Mymensingh district in British India. [1] He was the eldest of three children, two brothers and a sister. He married in 1965 and with his wife Kanon Sarker has one son, namely, Suman Sarker (he lives in Slovakia) and a daughter, namely, Sudipta Sarkar (she lives in Bangladesh).
He is a member of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB)'s Committees of Concerned Citizens of Bangladesh. [5]
Sarker took the profession of teaching after graduation by joining the Ashulia College in Netrikona in 1957. Later he joined the Nasirabad College in 1964 where he taught Bengali literature at the pre-university and undergraduate levels until his retirement in 2002.
Since the late 1960s, Sarker has remained involved in the cultural activities of Mymensingh. He has been a member of Mymensingh Press Club since long. In 2007, he started a magazine titled Shomaj, Orthonithir O Rastro (tr. The Society, Economy and State).
Sarker served as the president of Udichi Central Sangsad of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi. [1]
Sarker's latest book "Prottoy Protigya Protibha" was published in February 2019. [4]
Sarker has always spoken for upholding and ensuring human rights and for resisting social oppression, discrimination and communal politics. On 29 April 2006, he presided over a regional dialogue on national election policy and the initiative of the civil society in Mymensingh. [6] As chair of a meeting organised in Mymensingh in observance of the World Press Freedom Day in 2006, he said that now everything is captured by money and, consequently, it is so difficult to ensure freedom of press since the press is owned and controlled by the corporations and business magnets who act in favour of capitalism and serve as an agent of capitalist imperialism and globalisation. There is certainly a strong relationship among media and development and poverty alleviation but poverty will never be reduced until corruption, injustice, inequality etc. eliminated from the society. He urged all to achieve freedom and establish one's right through continuous struggle." [7] He believes that religion-based politics should be banned in line with the constitution of Bangladesh of 1972. He also maintained that the Members of the Parliaments should not be involved in activities other than legislating. [6]
Sarker was arrested on 3 March 1976 and detained for 18 months. [4]
Noted film-maker Tanvir Mokammel produced a documentary 1971 with a section on Sarker. It was released in March 2006. [9]
So far Sarker has published 17 titles to his credit. One of his important publication is Pakistaner Janmo Mrityu-Darshan, published in 2005. Another important book is Bangladesher Kavigan published by Bangla Academy in 1985. Some other books are Sahittyar Kachey Pratyasha, Bangalee Somajtantrik Otihya, Sankritir Sangram, Manab Mon, Manab Dharma and Shomaj Biplab, Aamaader Chintacharchar Dig-diganta , Sirajuddin Kashimpuri , Haricharan Acharjya , Golpe Golpe Bakyaran and Dijatitatwa Niotibad O BijnanChetona , [10] [11]
Hasan Azizul Huq was a Bangladeshi short-story writer and novelist. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1999, Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1970 and Independence Award in 2019.
Mohammad Zahirullah, known as Zahir Raihan, was a Bangladeshi novelist, writer and filmmaker. He is most notable for his documentary Stop Genocide (1971), made during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was posthumously awarded Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1992 by the Government of Bangladesh.
The Daily Prothom Alo is a daily newspaper in Bangladesh, published from Dhaka in the Bengali language. It is the largest circulated newspaper in Bangladesh.
Bande Ali Mia was a Bangladeshi poet, lyricist, novelist, dramatist, essayist, children’s writer and journalist. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1962 and Ekushey Padak in 1988.
Rabeya Khatun was a Bangladeshi novelist. She wrote over 50 novels and more than 400 short stories. Her works also include essays, research, religious history and travelogues. She was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1973, Ekushey Padak in 1993 and Independence Day Award in 2017 by the Government of Bangladesh.
Rizia Rahman was a Bangladeshi novelist. She had a number of novels and short stories to her credit. Her works cut across all genres. She was best known for the novel Bong Theke Bangla. She was the recipient of Bangla Academy Literary Award (1978). As of 2018, she had published more than 50 novels and short story collections during her long career.
Ghulam Murshid is a Bangladeshi author, scholar and journalist, based in London. He won a number of awards, including Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1982 for his contribution to research.; Prothom Alo Book Award in 2007; IFIC literary prize 2018; the Ekusey Padak for language and literature in 2021 and the Vidyasagar Endowments Lectures 1973 at Calcutta University. Besides being a prolific author, Dr. Murshid is a distinguished lexicographer. He edited a three-volume Bengali dictionary, called 'Bibartonmulak Bangla Abhidhan', published in 2013–2014, by the Bangla Academy. In the two hundred years' of history of Bengali dictionaries, it is the first to be based on historical principles. It provides the evolution of the form and meaning of every word and traces the first use thereof in written Bengali.
Syed Abul Maksud was a Bangladeshi journalist, columnist, research scholar, essayist, and writer. He was acclaimed for his critical and research work. He was a regular contributor to the Daily Prothom Alo. His essays on literature, society, culture and politics are much appreciated for his clear view, lucid language and simple style. He carried out substantive research works on "the lives of famous litterateurs such as Rabindranath Tagore, Buddhadeva Bose", Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Syed Waliullah etc. His Journal of Germany is a popular travel book. In 1995, he was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award by Bangla Academy for his contributions to Bengali Literature.
Intekhab Dinar is a popular Bangladeshi actor known for starring in the Ekushey Television tv series Bondhone and Chorki series Unoloukik.
Golam Samdani Quraishy was a Bangladeshi poet and writer. He was given Independence Day Award posthumously in 2017 by the Government of Bangladesh.
Gazi Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi lawyer, writer, translator, columnist and television personality. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1985 and Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1983 by the Government of Bangladesh. He wrote over 77 books on law and language in English and Bengali language.
Qamrul Hassan Bhuiyan was a Bangladeshi Major in the Bangladesh Army. He was a freedom fighter, liberation war researcher and writer. He was the founder chairman of Center for Liberation War Studies. He received Bangla Academy Award in the year 2018 for his contribution to the liberation war literature.
Mahbub Talukdar was a Bangladeshi poet, writer, civil servant, and one of the Election Commissioners of Bangladesh. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2012 for his contribution in juvenile literature. He was a Freedom Fighter and joined the exiled government in 1971.
Khalekdad Chowdhury, also known by pen names Shahadat Chowdhury and Atashbaz, is a reputed Bangladeshi writer, playwright and novelist. In recognition of his contribution to Bengali language and literature, the government of Bangladesh posthumously awarded him the country's second highest civilian award Ekushey Padak in 2018.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq is a Bangladeshi writer, essayist, translator, critic, columnist and activist. He is a former professor of Bengali language and literature at the University of Dhaka. He is the convener of Rashtrabhasha Bangla Rokkha Komiti. He received Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981.
Syed Salahuddin Zaki was a Bangladeshi film director, producer and film writer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Dialogue for the film Ghuddi (1980). He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2021. Zaki died in Dhaka on 18 September 2023, at the age of 77.
Musharraf Karim was a Bangladeshi writer and journalist. He was conferred with the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2003 for his contribution to juvenile literature. He was a fellow of Bangla Academy too.
Mamunul Haque is a Bangladeshi Deobandi Islamic scholar, politician, academic, writer, editor, and social reformer. He is the former Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Secretary General of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Shaykh al-Hadith of Jamia Rahmania Arabia Dhaka, Founder of Babri Mosque Bangladesh, Editor-in-Chief of Monthly Rahmani Paigam, President of Bangladesh Khelafat Youth Majlish and Khatib at Baitul Mamur Jame Mosque. He is also a leading figure in several organizations, including Rabetatul Waizin Bangladesh, an organization of Islamic speakers in Bangladesh. He is particularly popular with the hard-line speaks against atheists, secularists, anti-islamist and was arrested for leading the movement in this regard. 65 organizations including Bangladesh Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League have started a massive movement across the country demanding banning, arrest and exemplary punishment of him for promoting Islamic fundamentalism. In 2021, his second wife accused him of raping her.
Mohammad Raushan Yazdani was a Bengali author and researcher of folk literature. As a folklorist, his work was crucial due to his discoveries of tales and poems from the remotest villages of eastern Bengal. His most celebrated work is Momenshahir Loka-Sahitya dedicated to folk literature in Momenshahi (Mymensingh) Yazdani was one of the most popular Bengali poets in the Pakistan period.
Monzur-I-Mowla was a Bangladeshi author, poet and former director general of Bangla Academy. He was elected director general of Bangla Academy from 1982 to 1986. His list of poetry books include Nimagna, Ki Kore Pabo, Mati Here Jai, Shawla o Dinghi, Pure Pure, Ai din Mitthey, Bandana Bristir and Peyecho Ki. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2007 and Bangla Academy Rabindra Award in 2014.
