Dr. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan, is a public speaker [1] and a retired Professor of English, from PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. [2]

Education

Dr. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan as an Educationalist strongly believes in bringing about attitudinal improvement and social development through value based education. Helping people realize their potential and uniqueness is her prime concern which adds depth, dimension and difference to her motivational talk. Dr. Jayanthasri Balakrishnan is a former Professor and Reader of English in PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, with 35 years of teaching experience. She is a double doctorate, having been awarded two Ph.D. Degrees, one in English by the Pondicherry University in 1998, and the second one in Tamil by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore in 2009. She also holds a master's degree in education from the University of Madras. She is a registered Guide of Bharathiar University for Ph.D. for both English and Tamil. She did her research in the ‘English renderings of Kuṟuntokai’, which deals with the problems of translating the Tamil text Kuṟuntokai. For her doctorate in Tamil, she submitted her thesis on Tamil writer Jayakanthan's novellas. [3]

Career

She is a Resource Person of the UGC for various Indian Universities. She is an educationalist, writer, poet, feminist [4] and a translator and has widely varying interests including literary theory, theatre and drama. [5] [6] [7] She has been lauded by‘The Hindu’ in ‘The Personality of the week’ for her distinct thoughts on education. Apart from taking part in several television programs, she also presents a program named Manadhil urudhi vendum in Kalaignar TV. [8] [9]

Awards

Having worked as the Chief Editor in Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Mysore she was able to bring an updated translated version of Tamil vintage classic,‘Kuṟuntokai’ in English. She worked as the Sub-editor of the Tamil Magazine Disaigal for a short span of time. In an open competition held by the popular Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan, she won ‘The Best short story writer award’ from the hands of Tamil writer Sujatha. She has delivered many talks on writer Jayakanthan. She has also published her short story collection in the name of "Mazhaivil Manidhargal" (Men of Rainbows) and a collection of essays named "Mouna Iraichal". As a translator, she has translated select poems of Ainkurunuru and some of the works of Tamil writers such as Bharathi, Kalyanji and so. [10] The translation of Tamil poet Sirpi Balasubramaniam's ‘Poojiyangalin Sangili’ is published as ‘The Chain of Absolutes’. [11]

He is popularly known by his mononymous title "Bharati/ Bharathiyaar," and also by the other title "Mahakavi Bharati". His numerous works included fiery songs kindling patriotism during the Indian Independence movement. He fought for the emancipation of women, against child marriage, vehemently opposed the caste system, and stood for reforming society and religion. He was also in solidarity with Dalits.

D. Jayakanthan, popularly known as JK, was an Indian writer, journalist, orator, filmmaker, critic and activist. Born in Cuddalore, he dropped out of school at the age of 9 and went to Madras, where he joined the Communist Party of India. In a career spanning six decades, he authored around 40 novels, 200 short stories, apart from two autobiographies. Outside literature, he made two films. In addition, four of his other novels were adapted into films by others.

Coimbatore district is one of the 38 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Coimbatore is the administrative headquarters of the district. Kuṟuntokai is a classical Tamil poetic work and traditionally the second of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthokai) in the Sangam literature. The collection belongs to the akam (love) category, and each poem consists of 4 to 8 lines each. The Sangam literature structure suggests that the original compilation had 400 poems, but the surviving Kuruntokai manuscripts have 402 poems. According to Takanobu Takahashi – a Tamil literature scholar, these poems were likely composed between 100 CE and 300 CE based on the linguistics, style and dating of the authors. Kamil Zvelebil, a Tamil literature and history scholar, states that the majority of the poems in the Kuruntokai were likely composed between the 1st century BCE and the 2nd century CE. The Kuruntokai manuscript colophon states that it was compiled by Purikko (உரை), however nothing is known about this compiler or the patron.

Vannadasan, aka Kalyanji is a Tamil writer from India. He was born as Siva Kalyana Sundaram in Tirunelveli in 1946, where he currently resides.. He is a son of Thi. Ka. Sivasankaran, a renowned Tamil writer. He writes short stories and non fiction articles under the pseudonym of Vannadhasan and poems under Kalyanji. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil in 2016 for his short story collection Oru Siru Isai. He is also a recipient of Vishnupuram Literary Award, which he also won in 2016.

Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam is the chairman and the managing trustee of Dharmaveera K Govindaswamy Naidu Medical Trust, which runs the K.G. Hospital in Coimbatore, India. He was awarded a Padma Shri in 2005. Dr GB, as he is fondly known as, was born on 5 April 1942 at Annur village of Coimbatore district and graduated with a Masters of Science from Madras Medical College. He then received his post graduate training in surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago (USA).

Dr. Brenda E.F. Beck, also known as Brindha Beck, is a Canadian anthropologist and exporter of Tamil culture. She has published eight books and authored over sixty journal articles and is a key figure in raising awareness of Tamil culture in Toronto, Canada, where many Tamil Indians settled after the Tamil Diaspora. She lived in Olapalayam near Kangayam for two years in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. She spent two years there for her doctorate in anthropology, awarded by the University of Oxford. The title of the thesis was Social and conceptual order in Koṅku. She published her research in a book under the title of Peasant Society in Koňku.

Vanathi Srinivasan (/ʋaːnati/) is an Indian politician and a lawyer. She has practiced law in Madras High Court since 1993. She is a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Coimbatore South constituency. She currently serves as National President of the Women's Wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is member of Central Election Committee of Bharatiya Janata Party since 2022.
