Jazz Refreshed (stylised as jazz re:freshed) is a contemporary jazz record label in London whose roster includes Shabaka Hutchings, SEED Ensemble, Nubya Garcia, and Rosie Turton.

History

In 2017 the organisation appointed Yvette Griffith as executive director. Griffith had been with the organisation as a consultant since 2013, helping them to win Arts Council funding. [1] In 2019, Griffith won the h100 award for services to music [2] and was awarded an OBE in the 2024 New Years Honours List for services to Cultural Philanthropy and to Music. [3] Griffith stepped down as CEO in 2024, after being appointed CEO of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. [4]

Jazz Refreshed promote and publish young British jazz musicians. They have run a showcase at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, for a number of years. [5] [6] Artists showcased at their 2019 SXSW event included Nerija, Joe Armon Jones, Sarah Tandy, Yussef Dayes and Ezra Collective. [6]

Jazz Refreshed holds a weekly live residency, annual festival, and band development programmes. [7] Their recording series 5ive showcases five tracks by a range of artists. [8]

It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. The Parliamentary Jazz Awards in the United Kingdom are organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) at the Houses of Parliament in London. The group consists of over a hundred members drawn from across the UK political parties. The awards were the brainchild Bob Blizzard, a long-time enthusiast of the jazz genre who was concerned that there was a lack of national recognition for the work of jazz performers and venues across the UK. Blizzard was involved with organising and running the awards for 11 years. Also supporting the awards are Jazz Services, Jazz UK, Jazzwise, the UK Musicians' Union jazz section, and PPL.

Tomorrow's Warriors (TW) is a jazz music education and artist development organisation that was co-founded in 1991 by Janine Irons and Gary Crosby, committed to championing diversity, inclusion and equality across the arts through jazz, with a special focus on "Black musicians, female musicians and those whose financial or other circumstances might lock them out of opportunities to pursue a career in the music industry". Crosby drew inspiration from having been a member of the Jazz Warriors, a London-based group of musicians that in the 1980s showcased many young Black British musicians who went on to achieve international success.

Your Queen Is a Reptile is the third album by British jazz group Sons of Kemet, released in March 2018 on Impulse! Records. Band leader Shabaka Hutchings wrote and plays saxophone on all tracks, Theon Cross plays tuba, and Seb Rochford and Tom Skinner play drums. It also features toaster Congo Natty and performance poet Josh Idehen.

Shabaka Hutchings, also known simply as Shabaka, is a British jazz musician, composer and bandleader. He leads the band Shabaka and the Ancestors, and formerly led Sons of Kemet before its dissolution in 2022. He was also a member of The Comet Is Coming, performing under the stage name King Shabaka. Hutchings has played saxophone and other wind instruments with the Sun Ra Arkestra, Andre 3000, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, Polar Bear, Melt Yourself Down, Heliocentrics, London Brew and Zed-U.

Tom Skinner is an English drummer, percussionist and record producer. He co-founded the jazz band Sons of Kemet and the rock band the Smile. He has released two albums under the name Hello Skinny. His first album under his own name, Voices of Bishara, was released in November 2022.

Edward Wakili-Hick is an English drummer, percussionist, record producer and composer. He is known for his performances with music bands and individual artistes like the Sons of Kemet, Nubya Garcia, Kokoroko and Ezra Collective. In 2022, he released an album from his project, the Nok Cultural Ensemble, Njhyi.
