Jean-François Phliponeau (23 November 1950 — 9 May 1976) was a French rugby union international. [1]
Phliponeau was born in Algiers, French Algeria, but grew up in mainland France. His hometown club was RC Rouen, which he left in 1971 to join AS Montferrand, from where he gained selection for France as a winger in the 1973 Five Nations Championship. Capped twice during the tournament, Phliponeau debuted in France's win over Wales at the Parc des Princes and also played against Ireland at Lansdowne Road, scoring a try in a French loss. [2]
In 1976, Phliponeau was killed by a lightning strike on the Stade Marcel-Michelin pitch, while playing a practice match with AS Montferrand teammates ahead of their appearance in the Challenge Yves du Manoir final. He was 25 years of age. [3]

The Association Sportive Michelin was later renamed the Association Sportive Montferrand (ASM), and the rugby club became known as ASM Clermont-Auvergne. A rugby union tournament was held in May 1936, three months prior to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Rugby union had been an official Olympic sport in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924, but was dropped from the Olympic program after the 1924 Paris Games. The 1936 tournament is not mentioned in the official report of the organising committee of the Berlin Games, and has never been given the status of an official demonstration sport for those Games.
The 1979 France rugby union tour of Fiji New Zealand Tahiti was a series of ten matches played in June and July 1979 by the France national rugby union team in Fiji, New Zealand and Tahiti.
