The BurundiNational Defence Force is the state military organisation responsible for the defence of Burundi.
Burundi originated in the 16th century as a small kingdom in the African Great Lakes region. After European contact,it was united with the Kingdom of Rwanda,becoming the colony of Ruanda-Urundi - first colonised by Germany and then by Belgium. Jean-Baptiste Manwangari is a Burundian born in the 1950s. He is from the Kirundo Province. He was a member of the Pan-African Parliament from Burundi. Manwangari is a member of the nationalist Union for National Progress party. He is also a Tutsi. Since the beginning of his political career,under the chairmanship of President Jean-Baptiste Bagaza,he is an influential member of Union for National Progress party of which he was the chairman. He was member of various governments since 1976. He was on the head of different ministries,such as Justice,Interior,Transport,Post and Telecommunications,territorial administration and was a leading senior advisor to the President Pierre Buyoya for political and legal questions. He was also a long time a member of parliament as MP and Senator.
On 25 April 2015,the ruling political party in Burundi,the National Council for the Defense of Democracy –Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD),announced that the incumbent President of Burundi,Pierre Nkurunziza,would run for a third term in the 2015 presidential election. The announcement sparked protests by those opposed to Nkurunziza seeking a third term in office.
The 1976 Burundian coup d'état was a bloodless military coup that took place in Burundi on 1 November 1976. An Army faction,led by Deputy Chief of Staff Jean-Baptiste Bagaza,ousted President Michel Micombero. Bagaza formed the 30-member Supreme Revolutionary Council to take control,suspended the country's constitution and was inaugurated as president on 10 November 1976.
Caritas Mategeko Karadereye was a Burundian politician and activist. Alongside Euphrasie Kandeke,who was named Minister for Women's Questions,she became one of the first women to serve in the Burundian cabinet when she was appointed Minister of Social Affairs by Jean-Baptiste Bagaza in 1982. At the time,she was the vice-secretary general of the Union of Burundian Women. She remained in the cabinet until 1987. During her career,she also spent time as a local representative for the Director General of UNESCO. Mategeko was a Tutsi;her sister,a student,was among those slain during the Burundian genocide of 1972. Karadereye also wrote on the subject of women and Burundian society,publishing a paper on the subject in 1969.
Joseph Biroli-Baranyanka or Joseph Biroli was a Burundian politician and was the first Burundian to receive a university education. Born in 1929 to a prominent chief,he was a Ganwa of the Batare clan. He performed well as a student and earned a diploma from the Institut universitaire des Territoires d'Outre-Mer in 1953. After continuing his education at several other universities he took up work for the European Economic Community. In 1960 his brother Jean-Baptiste Ntidendereza co-founded the Christian Democratic Party,and Biroli became the party's president. His main political rival was Prince Louis Rwagasore,a Ganwa of the Bezi clan who led the Union for National Progress. Biroli was friendly to the Belgian colonial administration in Ruanda-Urundi,while UPRONA demanded immediate independence.
Jean-Baptiste Ntidendereza was a Burundian politician. A co-founder of the Christian Democratic Party,he served as Minister of Interior of Burundi in 1961. He was later convicted of conspiring to kill Louis Rwagasore,a political opponent,and publicly executed.

The former editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Iwacu,she is particularly known for being arbitrarily imprisoned by the Burundian government in October 2019,along with three of her colleagues,while reporting on armed clashes between Burundian forces and paramilitary groups from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She was sentenced to two years in prison and was later released before going into exile in Belgium.
