Jeanne Paquette Atkins (born 1949/1950) is an American politician who was the 25th Secretary of State of Oregon,having been appointed on March 6,2015,by Governor Kate Brown following Brown's ascension to the state's highest office. [1] [2] Atkins is a member of the Democratic Party. [1] [3] She did not run for a full term as Secretary of State and later became state Democratic Party chair.
Atkins ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives twice,in 1992 and 1994. From 1998 until 2004,she was a division director for reproductive and women's health for the Oregon Department of Human Services. Atkins also worked as staff director for Democrats in the Oregon Senate from 1993 to 1994. Between 2004 and 2009,she served as Chief of Staff for the Oregon House Democratic Caucus,then-House Speaker Jeff Merkley,and then-House Speaker Dave Hunt. In the private and nonprofit sector,she has worked for Planned Parenthood,the United Way of America,and the Women's Equity Action League. [4]
On August 24,2009,Atkins was appointed as United States Senator Jeff Merkley's State Director. She assumed the office on October 5,2009. [2] [5] She retired from the post in January 2015. [6]
Atkins was reportedly one of the first people Kate Brown considered for the position of secretary of state after Brown became governor in February 2015. She said after her appointment that she did not plan to run for a full term in 2016. [1]

In May 2017,Atkins was elected chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon,defeating Larry Taylor. [9] [10]

Dennis Michael Richardson was an American attorney,businessman,and politician who served as the 26th Secretary of State of Oregon from 2017 until his death in 2019. Richardson was from Central Point,Oregon and served six terms in the Oregon House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party. He represented House District 4,which included portions of Jackson and Josephine counties,and was the Republican nominee for Governor of Oregon in the 2014 election,losing to incumbent Democrat John Kitzhaber.
Jeffrey Alan Merkley is an American politician serving as the junior United States senator from Oregon since 2009. A member of the Democratic Party,he served from 1999 to 2009 as the representative for the 47th district in the Oregon House of Representatives,which covers central Multnomah County on the eastern side of Portland;he was the speaker of the House during the last two years of his tenure.
The 2008 United States Senate election in Oregon was held on November 4,2008. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith sought reelection to a third term. Smith was the only Republican Senator from the West Coast and the only Republican holding statewide office in Oregon. He was opposed by Democrat Jeff Merkley,the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives,and David Brownlow of the Constitution Party of Oregon. Merkley won by a narrow margin,with Smith not conceding until two days after the election. Merkley became the first Democrat to win this seat since 1960,and since Smith was the only Republican holding statewide office in Oregon at the time,this was the first time since 1860 that no Republicans won or held statewide office in Oregon. Merkley's inauguration marked the first time since 1967 that Democrats held both of Oregon's United States Senate seats.
Katherine Brown is an American politician and attorney who served as the 38th governor of Oregon from 2015 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party,she served three terms as the state representative from the 13th district of the Oregon House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997,three terms as the state senator from the 21st district of the Oregon Senate from 1997 to 2009,three terms as majority leader of the Oregon Senate from 2003 to 2009,and two terms as Oregon Secretary of State from 2009 to 2015.
