Louisiana State University is an American public land-grant research university in Baton Rouge,Louisiana,United States. The university was founded in 1860 near Pineville,Louisiana,under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning &Military Academy. The current LSU main campus was dedicated in 1926 and consists of more than 250 buildings constructed in the style of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio,occupying a 650-acre (260 ha) plateau on the banks of the Mississippi River.

Ruth Simmons is an American professor and academic administrator. Simmons served as the eighth president of Prairie View A&M University,a historically Black university (HBCU),from 2017 until 2023. From 2001 to 2012,she served as the 18th president of Brown University,where she was the first African-American president of an Ivy League institution. During her time at Brown,Simmons was named the best college president by Time magazine. Prior to Brown University,she headed Smith College,one of the Seven Sisters and the largest women's college in the United States,beginning in 1995. During her tenure,Smith College launched the first accredited engineering program at an all-women's college.

The university is a unit of the LSU System and operates under the auspices of the Louisiana Board of Regents. As of spring 2024,LSUA had an enrollment of 5,405 students which is recorded as the highest in the university's history. The institution is located eight miles south of downtown Alexandria.
