The University of Louisiana System (UL System) is a public university system in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It enrolls more students than the other three public university systems in the state; [2] as of October 2023, it claims more than 91,500 students throughout its institutions. [1] Its headquarters are in the Claiborne Building in Baton Rouge. [3] [4]

The University of Louisiana System has nine member institutions:

Administration

The System President and CEO is Jim Henderson, former president of Northwestern State University and former chancellor of Bossier Parish Community College. Henderson was named by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana after a nationwide search. He began the role, January 1, 2016.

One of the system's former supervisors is the late Jimmy D. Long of Natchitoches, considered an authority on educational funding and innovation. The large Finance & Facilities Planning Division was headed by Nick Bruno, Vice President for Business & Finance, for five years from 2005 to 2010, whereupon Bruno was selected to serve as president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Past presidents

Crain, Clausen, and Moffett had previously been president of Southeastern Louisiana University. Jindal, a future Louisiana governor, was the youngest president of the University of Louisiana system at age 28.

Naming conventions

In 1999, the University of Southwestern Louisiana became the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Northeast Louisiana University became the University of Louisiana at Monroe, based on legislation passed in 1995. [11] ULS policy requires both school's abbreviated names to include the municipality, precluding the use of "UL" alone. [11] In 2013, Woodley stated that the policy does not address stand-alone usage of "Louisiana" including within athletics, where usage of particular monikers and acronyms became a point of contention. [11] Soon after, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's athletic moniker became the "Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns." [12]

Anthony Claude Leach Jr., known as Buddy Leach, was an American businessman, lawyer, military veteran, and Democratic politician from Louisiana. From 1979 to 1981, he served one term as a U.S. representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district. He also served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives and as chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party.

Micheal Randolph Moffett, known as Randy Moffett, is a former president of the University of Louisiana System. He was appointed to the position on July 25, 2008. He retired on the last day of 2012 and was succeeded on the first day of 2013 by Sandra Woodley.

John Luther Crain is an American accountant and academic administrator and formerly served as president of Southeastern Louisiana University, having been appointed to the position on February 17, 2009, by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System. He succeeded Randy Moffett. Crain so far has served the longest presidency at Southeastern Louisiana University and in the UL system.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nick Bruno</span> American academic (born 1951)

Nick Joseph Bruno has been the president of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, also known as ULM, since November 8, 2010. He was appointed by the Baton Rouge-based University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Bruno is the eighth president of ULM. He succeeded James E. Cofer Sr., who had resigned to become president of Missouri State University. Bruno's selection was made official in an announcement by University of Louisiana System president Randy Moffett. Bruno's official investiture was on 2011 October 2.

Valarie Dawn Hope Hodges is a politician and businessperson from Denham Springs, Louisiana. She is a member of the Republican Party and represented from 2012 to 2024 the 64th state House district of the Louisiana House of Representatives which includes the rural portions of northwest Livingston Parish and northeast East Baton Rouge parish including the areas of Pride and Watson. nN January 2024, she moves up to the District 31 seat in the state Senate.

Ray Paul Authement Sr. was an American academic administrator and the longest-serving university president in the United States. From 1974 to 2008, he was the fifth president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, formerly known as the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Sally Clausen is executive director of the Ingram Center for Public Trusteeship and Governance, an affiliate of the American Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. She earlier, in 2010, retired as Louisiana's commissioner of public higher education, a post she had held for one year relinquishing the presidency of the University of Louisiana System. Previously she served as the first female president of Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

Thomas Greenwood Clausen was an educator from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who was the last elected state superintendent of education, a position which he filled as a Democrat from 1984 to 1988 during the third administration of Governor Edwin Edwards.

Anthony Ray Robichaux was an American college baseball coach who served as head coach of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team. He had previously served as head coach at McNeese State.
