Jeannine Otis, also known as "Jahneen," is an American singer, educator and music director. [1]

Early life and education

At the age of 16, she was accepted early to Wellesley College and was the first African-American to a Presser Music Scholar. She earned a BA in Sociology and Musicology. She went on to earn an MA in Theater Education and Performance at Emerson College, where she won a teaching fellowship. [2]

Career

She has performed with Kool and the Gang, the Shirelles, Grover Washington Jr., Eliot Goldenthal, Pete Seeger and many leading hip-hop artists. She has worked in theater with Galt MacDermot, Liz Swados and Robert Lupone. [2]

She wrote a book published by Seabury Press, titled The Gathering, based on her work with imprisoned teenagers. [1] The Gathering has been turned into a theatrical performance. [1] She worked with the New York City Department of Education as an Arts in Education evaluator. [2]

She has toured extensively in productions of Porgy and Bess . [2]

She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The City Council of New York, [3] the St. Mark's Griffin Outreach Award, the William A. Morris Award from the NAACP, [3] and a Reggie for her Staten Island appearance in The Cradle Will Rock (which she also performed in Manhattan), [4] and she is listed in "Who's Who in America." [2]

She has performed at the Staten Island Jazz Festival for many years, [5] [6] [7] [8] at the Empowering Voices Dinner Gala hosted by Illuminart Productions in 2018. [9]

Currently, she is a Warner European recording artist, [10] [2] has been music director for St. Marks Church-in-the-Bowery for 25 years, [1] [10] an outreach/education coordinator for the Staten Island Museum, and president and consultant for Light of Mine Productions. [2]

She collaborated with Heikki Sarmanto on Magic Song . [11]

Jeannine lives on Staten Island in New York City with her long-time partner, Larry Marshall. [2]

Susan E. Wagner High School is a New York City public school located at 1200 Manor Road in Staten Island, New York. The school is owned and run by the New York City Department of Education. It opened in September 1968, and was named in honor of Susan E. Wagner (1909–1964), the late wife of former mayor Robert F. Wagner Jr. On average, the school has about 3,300 students. Wagner's school colors are Navy and White, with the Falcon as the mascot. Wagner has a variety of programs including the Law and Politics program, the Virtual Enterprise program, the Scholars Academy, Air Force JROTC, Theatrical Arts program, and annual SING! productions. Carola Christina Standertskjöld-Liemola, professionally known as Carola, was a Finnish jazz and pop singer. Her style was partially inspired by American singers of the 1950s. Simultaneously, it was in the spirit of the modal jazz scene going down in Europe in the 1960s. Mostly, Carola's jazz repertoire consisted in idiosyncratic versions of American songs in English, while her most famous jazz track "The Flame" was an original composition by Esa Pethman and the lyrics by the singer herself. As the vocalist for Esa Pethman's quartet and Hazy Osterwald's sextet in the early 1960s, Carola made fame in Finland and Sweden, and toured Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland. Her most significant recording is a session with the Heikki Sarmanto Trio from 1966, which the Finnish Music Information Centre considers among the original blueprints of Finnish jazz. Carola's recordings have been credited for the accosting tone of her contralto voice and her phrasing. The singer also co-produced the groovy approach of her supporting orchestras. In late 1960s and early 1970s, she performed in nine languages and a wide variety of styles, including chanson, schlager, Latin, rock'n'roll, and soul. After her death of Alzheimer's disease in 1997, Carola's music was revived in 2004 with two Best of albums and Carola & Heikki Sarmanto Trio reaching the Finnish charts.

Empire Outlets New York City is a 350,000-square-foot (33,000 m2) retail complex in the St. George neighborhood of Staten Island in New York City. Construction on Empire Outlets started in 2015, and the complex opened on May 15, 2019. Tentative plans called for 100 stores, but there is only space for about 70 stores, less than half of which are currently occupied. It is the first outlet mall in New York City. The mall is located next to the St. George Terminal, a major ferry, train, and bus hub.
