Jefferson-Scranton Community School District or Jefferson-Scranton Community Schools (JSCS) was/is a school district headquartered in Jefferson, Iowa, Greene County,United States. It served the communities of Jefferson and Scranton, Paton-Churdan, Grand Junction and other surrounding towns.

History

The district was established on July 1, 1992 by the merger of the Jefferson and Scranton school districts. [1]

In 2001 the district had 1,422 students; this declined to 1,002 in 2013. [2]

In 2012 school year it entered a grade-sharing relationship (in which students from one district attended school in another district for certain grade levels) with the East Greene Community School District. [3] The two districts merged into the Greene County Community School District on July 1, 2014. [4]

Schools

At one time it had four schools: Jaques/South Elementary Schools (Jefferson), Scranton Elementary School, Jefferson-Scranton Middle School, and Jefferson-Scranton High School. [5]

The Scranton school building, a K-12 school until circa 1989, [6] had a three-story section built in 1915. [7] Circa 1997 it had about 277 students. [6] The school closed in 2008; the school district had notified the city government in 2006 so the city could plan for the future of the school. In 2010 the city government acquired the building, paying $1 for it, and converted it into a community center; the city government considered converting the school facility into an apartment block, but it determined it would have required too much money. The city government determined that it could not find a purpose for the 1913 section; therefore its razing occurred in 2012. The current Greene County district, as of 2014, rented the school gymnasium for athletic meetups. [7]

The 44,000-square-foot (4,100 m2) Jacques Elementary School was built in 1991–1992. [8]

Jefferson-Scranton High had about 425 students circa 1997. [9]

The Paton-Churdan Community School District is a public school district headquartered in Churdan, Iowa. The district is in Greene County and serves Churdan and Paton.

Farragut Community School District was a school district headquartered in Farragut, Iowa. Its territory included the communities of Farragut, Imogene, and Riverton. The district, from 2011 to 2016, also served secondary school students residing in Hamburg. The state of Iowa forced the district to close effective 2016.

Elk Horn-Kimballton Community School District (EH-K) was a school district headquartered in Elk Horn, Iowa. Its schools were EH-K Elementary School and EH-K High School.

Greene County Community School District (GCCSD) is a school district headquartered in Jefferson, Iowa.

East Greene Community School District was a school district headquartered in Grand Junction, Iowa. It served the communities of Grand Junction, Dana, and Rippey.

Anthon-Oto Community School District was a school district headquartered in Anthon, Iowa. The district, in Woodbury County, served Anthon and Oto.

East Sac County Community School District is a school district headquartered in Lake View, Iowa. The district covers portions of Sac County as well as portions of Carroll and Crawford counties. It serves Lake View, Sac City, and Wall Lake.

Wall Lake View Auburn Community School District was a school district in Iowa.

South Central Calhoun Community School District is a school district headquartered inside South Central Calhoun Middle School in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Rockwell City-Lytton Community School District was a school district headquartered in Rockwell City, Iowa.

Southern Cal Community School District was a school district headquartered in Lake City, Iowa.

Anita Community School District was a school district headquartered in Anita, Iowa. The district occupied portions of Cass, Adair, and Audubon counties, and served Anita and Wiota.

Woden-Crystal Lake Community School District (W-CL) was a school district headquartered in Crystal Lake, Iowa. It served Crystal Lake and Woden.

Fort Madison Community School District is a school district headquartered in Fort Madison, Iowa. Mostly in Lee County, with a small portion in Henry County, it serves Fort Madison, Houghton, St. Paul, and West Point. It also serves the unincorporated area of Denmark.

Howard-Winneshiek Community School District is a school district in Cresco, Iowa.
