Jefferson Center is a special education school in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, off of Blakely Street. It holds classes for a variety of special education programs, including multi-disabled, elementary autistic, secondary autistic, and life skills.
Dunmore is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, adjoining Scranton. Dunmore was settled in 1835 and incorporated in 1862. Extensive anthracite coal, brick, stone, and silk interests had led to a rapid increase in the population from 8,315 in 1890 to 23,086 in 1940. The population was 14,057 at the 2010 Census.

According to many definitions, a disability or functional impairment is an impairment that may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or some combination of these. Other definitions describe disability as the societal disadvantage arising from such impairments. Disability substantially affects a person's life activities and may be present from birth or occur during a person's lifetime.
Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. Disability is thus not just a health problem. It is a complex phenomenon, reflecting the interaction between features of a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives.
The building was formerly used as a Dunmore School District Elementary School, called Jefferson Elementary school, but in 1982, after the elementary school closed down, the [N.E.I.U. #19] [1] began renting out the building for their own use. As of 2006, the N.E.I.U. #19 has gained full ownership of the building and is no longer renting it.
There are currently four classes of students with multiple disabilities, [2] each holding about seven or eight students with one teacher, one teacher's assistant, and, if necessary, a full-time nurse for students who are medically fragile. There are five classes of either elementary autistic or secondary autistic students, [3] which hold about eight students and have one teacher, two teacher's assistants, and individual "one-on-one" specialists, provided by the students' school district, that monitor the behavior of the student they are assigned to. Students in the elementary autism classroom range from five years old to twelve years old, and those in the secondary autism classroom students range in age from thirteen years old to twenty-one years old. And finally, there are five classes of life skills students, which can hold up to ten students with one teacher, one teacher's assistant, and about one or two crisis-intervention workers who control the behavior of the students if necessary.
Jefferson Center offers many programs and activities to the students, which help make the atmosphere more like a regular-ed school. The programs are available to capable students and try to prepare them for life outside of Jefferson Center. The simplest program is used to test the students and make sure they can listen to and follow instructions before they are sent to more difficult programs. These simple programs include errands around the school, such as separating lunches for specific classrooms, picking up the recycling from each classroom when needed, or helping bring multi-disability students in and out of the building in the morning or afternoon. The next level of programs is also inside the building and is run by the school's cook. Higher level students prepare food in the morning, and lower level students help clean up in the afternoon.
The activities that Jefferson Center offers include annual holiday prties, field trips, basketball, cheerleading, the spirit team, and school pictures. These activities always include the presence of Regular-Ed students from are high schools and middle schools, in order to strive for inclusion. This allows the opportunity for Regular-Ed students to learn more about Special Needs, and for Special education students to feel more included in Regular-Ed activities.
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball through the defender's hoop while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one or more one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.
Cheerleading is an activity in which the participants cheer for their team as a form of encouragement. It can range from chanting slogans to intense physical activity. It can be performed to motivate sports teams, to entertain the audience, or for competition. Competitive routines typically range anywhere from one to three minutes, and contain components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting.
Special education is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, and accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and in their community which may not be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education.
These programs are focused toward what type of jobs the students are capable of after they graduate from Jefferson Center. The highest level program finds jobs for the students at places including Allied, McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Sam's Club, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Students who are involved in these programs tend to be more prepared for life after they graduate from Jefferson and are living on their own.

The buddy system is a procedure in which two individuals, the "buddies", operate together as a single unit so that they are able to monitor and help each other. As per Merriam-Webster, the first known use of the phrase “buddy system” goes as far back as 1942. Webster goes on to define the buddy system as “an arrangement in which two individuals are paired .” The buddy system is basically working together in pairs in a large group or alone. Both the individuals have to do the job. The job could be to ensure that the work is finished safely or the skill/learning is transferred effectively from one individual to the other.
A classroom is a learning space, a room in which both children and adults learn. Classrooms are found in educational institutions of all kinds, ranging from preschools to universities, and may also be found in other places where education or training is provided, such as corporations and religious and humanitarian organizations. The classroom provides a space where learning can take place uninterrupted by outside distractions.
A teaching assistant or teacher's aide (TA) or education assistant (EA) is an individual who assists a teacher with instructional responsibilities. TAs include graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), who are graduate students; undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs), who are undergraduate students; secondary school TAs, who are either high school students or adults; and elementary school TAs, who are adults. By definition, TAs assist with classes, but many graduate students serve as the sole instructor for one or more classes each semester as a teaching fellow or graduate student instructor, although in some states, such as Florida, they are called "teaching assistants". Graduate and adult TAs generally have a fixed salary determined by each contract period ; however, undergraduates and high school students are sometimes unpaid and in the US and other countries with the credit system, receive course credits in return for their assistance. Teaching assistants often help the main teacher by supporting students with learning disabilities, such as ADHD, Autism, or even physical disabilities, such as blindness or deafness.

It is often conferred for educators advancing in their field. Similar degrees include the Master of Arts in Education and the Master of Science in Education. The Master of Arts in Teaching, however, is substantially different.
Mainstreaming, in the context of education, is the practice of placing students with special education services in a general education classroom during specific time periods based on their skills. To clarify, this means students who are a part of the special education classroom will join the regular education classroom at certain times which are fitting for the special education student. These students may attend art or physical education in the regular education classrooms. Sometimes these students will attend math and science in a self-contained special education classroom, but attend English in a general education classroom. Schools that practice mainstreaming believe that students with special needs who cannot function in a general education classroom to a certain extent belong in the special education environment.
Pathlight School is a special school for high-functioning children with autism, located in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. Founded in 2004, it is run by the non-profit Autism Resource Centre, and comprises one half of the national educational provision for autistic children. The school coaches students in social and life skills, teaches them mainstream curriculum subjects and prepares them for employment, in an autism friendly environment. With more than 1000 pupils enrolled, the school has been noted for its achievements in special education in Singapore.

Inclusion in education refers to a model wherein special needs students spend most or all of their time with non-special needs students. It arise in the context of special education with an individualized education program or 504 plan, and is built on the notion that it is more effective for students with special needs to have said mixed experience for them to be more successful in social interactions leading to further success in life. Inclusion rejects but still provides the use of special schools or classrooms to separate students with disabilities from students without disabilities. Schools with inclusive classrooms do not believe in separate classrooms. They do not have their own separate world so they have to learn how to operate with students while being less focused on by teachers due to a higher student to teacher ratio.
