Jenny Yang is an American comedian, writer and actor from Los Angeles.

In 2020, Yang was selected as one of Variety 's “10 Comics To Watch” [1] and Vulture 's "Comedians You Should and Will Know in 2020". [2]

Early life and education

Yang was born in Taiwan and raised in the South Bay of Los Angeles. [3] Yang graduated in political science at Swarthmore College and was a PPIA Fellow for a Master's in urban planning at University of California, Los Angeles. [4] Before entering comedy, Yang worked for the Service Employees International Union, becoming a director before leaving due to poor work-life balance, getting into standup to "get some of my sanity back". [5]

Career

Yang is regularly featured on BuzzFeed videos on Asian American issues. [6] [7] Yang was featured in the 2013 Showtime documentary Why We Laugh: Funny Women. [8]

Between 2013 and 2018, Yang produced Disoriented Comedy, a nationally touring comedy showcase of Asian American women. Created by Yang, Atsuko Okatsuka and Yola Lu, the show debuted in 2012 at the David Henry Hwang Theater in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. [9] [5]

In 2014, Yang was the co-host of ISAtv's Angry Asian America along with Phil Yu, founder of the Angry Asian Man blog. [3]

As a television writer, Yang has written for season 1 of HBO Max's Gordita Chronicles , the final two seasons of Fox's Last Man Standing [5] and E!’s late-night talk show Busy Tonight with Busy Philipps.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Yang created Comedy Crossing a charity stand-up comedy show held inside the Animal Crossing video game and watched live via Zoom, which raised over $30,000 for causes related to the Black Lives Matter movement. [5]

In 2024, she had a recurring role as Xing in The Brothers Sun .

While primarily dominated by men throughout history, women have been represented in the field of comedy since the mid-1700s. Comedy, or creative works with the intention of humor, is thought to have originated in ancient Greek theatre in 425 BCE. Some of the first figures to enter the field, however, were faced with resistance and discrimination. A sense of humor in women was previously thought to have meant the ability to laugh at a man's joke, rather than to tell the joke herself. When women did finally enter comedy, it was seen as niche, thus making bookings hard to come by.

She is best known for her role as Ava Coleman in the ABC television series Abbott Elementary, for which she won a Screen Actors Guild Award, and an NAACP Image Award, in addition to nominations for three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Golden Globe Award.

Atsuko Okatsuka is a Taiwanese-American stand-up comedian, actress, and writer based in Los Angeles, California. She was named one of Variety's "Top 10 Comics to Watch" in 2022 and was the second Asian American woman to have a standup special on HBO. She started the viral #Dropchallenge with her grandmother.

Caleb Hearon is an American comedian, writer and actor. He performed stand-up regularly in Chicago and also performed at iO Theater until relocating to Los Angeles in 2020. Hearon is a writer for the series Human Resources.

Brandon Scott Jones is an American actor, comedian, and writer. He is best known for his role as Captain Isaac Higgintoot in the CBS series Ghosts and as Donny in the Warner Bros./Netflix film Isn't It Romantic.
