Intellectual property (IP) is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect. There are many types of intellectual property, and some countries recognize more than others. The best-known types are patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. The modern concept of intellectual property developed in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. The term "intellectual property" began to be used in the 19th century, though it was not until the late 20th century that intellectual property became commonplace in most of the world's legal systems.
The Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom is, since 2 April 2007, the operating name of The Patent Office. It is the official government body responsible for intellectual property rights in the UK and is an executive agency of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
Directive 2004/48/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 on the enforcement of intellectual property rights is a European Union directive in the field of intellectual property law, made under the Single Market provisions of the Treaty of Rome. Sir Hugh Ian Lang Laddie was a judge of the High Court of England and Wales. He was a leader in the field of intellectual property law. He was co-author of the Modern Law of Copyright (1980).
Jonathan Ward "Jon" Dudas is the senior vice president, senior associate to the president and secretary of the University of Arizona. He previously served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) until January 18, 2009. He was nominated to the position by former President George W. Bush in March 2004 and appointed in July 2004. Dudas previously served as acting Under Secretary and Director, and Deputy Under Secretary and Deputy Director from 2002 to 2004. He is also a member of the board of directors of Conversant Intellectual Property Management.
Managing Intellectual Property is a British media group which specializes in providing news and analysis on the intellectual property world. Initially launched as a monthly magazine reporting patent and trademark-related news in 1990, Managing IP has since grown to encompass data analysis, podcasts, conference reporting, rankings and research projects, as well as the longest-running awards programme for law firms in the IP world.
The Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice is a monthly peer-reviewed law journal covering intellectual property law and practice, published by Oxford University Press.
IPKat is a law blog founded in June 2003, and dedicated to intellectual property law (IP) with a focus on European law. The content comprises news of recent judicial rulings, decisions of patent and trade mark granting authorities, primary and secondary legislation, practice and procedural notes and recent publications, together with comments.
The European Intellectual Property Institutes Network (EIPIN) is a cooperation network of intellectual property (IP) institutions, organizing conferences. It was founded in 1999. Its aim is "to facilitate and increase cooperation among IP institutions and students in Europe".
Sir Nicholas Richard Pumfrey styled The Rt Hon. Lord Justice Pumfrey, was a British barrister. He served as a High Court judge for 10 years, and was promoted to the Court of Appeal little more than a month before his sudden death.
Francis Gerard Gurry is an Australian lawyer who served as the fourth director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 2008 to 2020. During that time, he was also the secretary-general of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). Gurry also served as a deputy director general of WIPO from 2003 to 2008.

Soft intellectual property is sometimes used to refer to trademarks, copyright, design rights and passing off, in contrast to "hard intellectual property", which is sometimes used to refer to patents. Use of this phrase is controversial among IP practitioners.
The WIPO Journal: Analysis and Debate of Intellectual Property Issues was a peer-reviewed law review established in 2009 that was published by Sweet & Maxwell on behalf of the World Intellectual Property Organization. Its editor-in-chief was Peter K. Yu. The WIPO Journal was discontinued at the end of 2016.

The World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR) is a bimonthly magazine providing news and analysis on issues in intellectual property. Between July 2011 and June 2012, the average number of copies per issue was about 5,200. All copies were distributed for free. The magazine is published since 2006 by Newton Media Ltd, which also publishes the World Intellectual Property Review Annual, a guide to "intellectual property developments in the past year." WIPR is not indexed in any major legal periodicals database, such as Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, lens.org, World Wide Science, Open Alex, etc.
Shamnad Basheer was an Indian legal scholar and founder of the blog SpicyIP. He was also the founder of IDIA, a trust which works on making legal education accessible for underprivileged students. Basheer was a Ministry of Human Resource Development Chaired Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the WBNUJS, Kolkata, and the Frank H. Marks Visiting Associate Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the George Washington University Law School, and a research associate at the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Center (OIPRC). He founded several initiatives such as SpicyIP, IDIA, P-PIL and Lex Biosis. Basheer intervened in the landmark Novartis case, filed a number of other public interest litigations and took initiative to bring about changes in the IPR regime in India.
Daren Tang Heng Shim is the fifth and current Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He is also Secretary-General of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). Tang previously headed the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and was a trade lawyer for the government of Singapore.
