Jerome D. Fitzgerald (born April 22, 1941) is an American politician from the state of Iowa.

Fitzgerald was born in Webster County, Iowa and attended Iowa State University. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1973 to 1979, as a Democrat. [1] He also made an unsuccessful run for governor in 1978, losing to incumbent Robert D. Ray.

Patrick William Fitzgerald Jr. is the current head coach of the Northwestern University Wildcats football team. He was selected after the unexpected death of Randy Walker and announced at a press conference on July 7, 2006. He was 31 at the time, making him the youngest head football coach in the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Division I FBS by five years. Fitzgerald would go on to become the longest-tenured head coach in Northwestern football history, and as of 2020 is the sixth longest-tenured head coach in Division I FBS. As a linebacker for Northwestern from 1993 to 1996, he won both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award twice as the best defensive player in college football. He was awarded a Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1997 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

The 2014 Iowa gubernatorial election took place on November 4, 2014, to elect the Governor of Iowa. Republican incumbent Terry Branstad ran for reelection to a sixth overall and second consecutive four-year term. Branstad went on to win a historic sixth term as governor by defeating Democratic challenger and State Senator Jack Hatch, and on December 14, 2015, he became the longest-serving governor in American history. He won 59.1% of the popular vote to Hatch's 37.3%, and carried every county in the state except Johnson.

The state congressional delegation flipped from a 3–1 Republican majority to a 3–1 Democratic majority. The Democrats last won the majority of seats in the 2010 election.

The 1978 Iowa gubernatorial election was held on November 7, 1978. Incumbent Republican Robert D. Ray defeated Democratic nominee Jerome D. Fitzgerald with 58.32% of the vote. As of 2021, this is the last time Johnson County voted for the Republican candidate.
