Jerry Clayton was the elected Sheriff of Washtenaw County, Michigan. A 30-year public safety professional, [1] Clayton was first elected sheriff in 2008. [2] He was re-elected in 2012, [3] 2016, [4] and 2020. [5] He did not run for reelection in 2024. [6] Clayton was succeeded by Washtenaw County Sheriff Alyshia Dyer as of the beginning of 2025. [7]
Clayton graduated from Eastern Michigan University, where he played on the football team. [8] He started at the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office in 1981 as a part-time corrections officer, and rose through the ranks before retiring as a first lieutenant in 2006. [8]
In 2008, Clayton, a Democrat, ran for Washtenaw County Sheriff against two-term incumbent Daniel Minzey. [8] Clayton racked up multiple endorsements from Democratic officials, and defeated Minzey in a 3-way primary in August, 2008. [8] Clayton then defeated his Republican opposition in November 2008. [8] He was sworn into office in January, 2009. [8]
Clayton has made community relations a hallmark of his term in office, appointing Derrick Jackson to the position of community liaison director. [8] Clayton has also been an advocate for increased funding for mental health-related services. In 2017, he helped lead the successful effort for a dedicated tax in Washtenaw County to fund mental health and public safety. [9] [10] Voters approved that tax in November 2017 by nearly a 2-1 margin. [10]
Clayton is known as a leader in the criminal-justice reform movement. In 2018, he was elected as a founding member of the national Council on Criminal Justice, an organization that seeks to better the criminal justice system. [11] In 2019, he was appointed to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration. [12] And in 2020, Clayton was selected to serve on the National Police Foundation's Council on Policing Reforms and Race, dedicated to improving racial equity in policing across the country. [13] He was also selected to serve on Governor Whitmer's Black Leadership Advisory Council, which will help the Governor develop, review, and recommend policies and actions designed to prevent and eradicate discrimination and racial inequity in Michigan. Clayton was re-elected to a fourth term in office in the 2020 election cycle. He defeated Ken Magee in the Democratic primary, securing 59,675 votes to Magee's 19,082. [15] Clayton had no Republican challenger in the November 2020 general election, and won with 159,603 votes (98.82%). [5]
Michael J. Bouchard is an American law enforcement officer and politician who has served as the sheriff of Oakland County, Michigan since 1999. A member of the Republican Party, Bouchard previously served in the Michigan State Senate from 1991 to 1999, and as the Senate Majority Leader from 1998 to 1999; he was also the unsuccessful Republican nominee for United States Senate in 2006, losing to incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow. In 2010 he was a candidate for Governor in the Republican Primary, losing to Rick Snyder and two other candidates. As of 2024, Bouchard is the only Republican countywide elected official in Oakland County.
Gretchen Esther Whitmer is an American lawyer and politician serving since 2019 as the 49th governor of Michigan. A member of the Democratic Party, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and in the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Mark Allen Hackel is an American politician serving as the County Executive of Macomb County, Michigan since the position was established in 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, Hackel previously served as the Macomb County Sheriff from 2001 to 2010.

He served two complete terms and one partial term in the Michigan House of Representatives between 2015 and 2019. He resigned from his position in the House when he was elected as the Mayor of Flint in 2019. Neeley's wife, Cynthia, was elected to his former seat on March 10, 2020. Neeley served two complete terms and one partial term on the Flint City Council between 2005 and 2014, prior to his tenure as Michigan Representative and was the Council's first African-American member to have come from Flint's Sixth Ward.

Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ran for re-election to a second term and faced former political commentator Tudor Dixon in the general election. Whitmer defeated Dixon by a margin of nearly 11 percentage points, a wider margin than polls indicated as well as a wider margin than Whitmer's first victory four years prior. Whitmer won independent voters by double-digit margins, which contributed to Dixon's defeat.
