James Roland Johnsen is an American academic and businessman. He has served in several public and private sector roles during his career,most notably as the 14th president of the University of Alaska system from July 2015 until July 2020. [1] [2]
His education includes a BA in politics from the University of California,Santa Cruz,master's in political science from the University of Chicago,and an EdD in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania. [3] [4]
Prior to joining the university,Johnsen held executive leadership positions in the private sector with Alaska Communications and with Doyon,Limited,and in higher education at the University of Minnesota and the University of Alaska between 1992-2008 in executive roles including director of labor relations,vice president of administration and chief of staff. He was also a visiting scholar at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California,Berkeley in 2002. [5]
Johnsen was appointed the president of the University of Alaska system on July 28,2015. [1] As the system president,his priorities included a systemwide Title IX compliance effort, [6] remedying UA's historic land grant deficit,restructuring of academic programs and administrative services of the university to increase student success and reduce cost, [7] [8] aligning with Alaska's primary and secondary education sectors, [9] and a systemwide push to achieve the State of Alaska's goal for 65 percent of Alaska's working age population to have a post-secondary degree or certificate of value by 2025. [10]
Johnsen assumed the role of president during a period of budget cuts following the state of Alaska’s loss of income from collapsed oil revenues. [11] [12] [13] In March 2016,Johnsen said university system would have to continue to cut back significantly. [12] At the same time,Johnsen made a public case for supporting Alaska's higher education system,extolling the virtues of education and the role the university can play in bolstering the state's economy. [12] [14]
In July 2019,Alaska governor Mike Dunleavy announced he was using his line-item veto powers to cut the University of Alaska System’s state funding by $130 million,or 41% of its total budget. [15] [16] The cuts were widely condemned,including by Johnsen,University of Alaska trustees,and public officials from across the political spectrum. [17] The outcry led to hearings being held by the Alaska State Legislature about a possible veto override;Johnsen was the first person to testify in these hearings. [16] Johnsen led a negotiation effort on behalf of the university with Dunleavy, [17] which ultimately resulted in the governor and the Board of Regents agreeing in August 2019 to cut $70 million of the university system’s budget –about half the size of the original cuts the governor had planned to make. [18]
The financial situation and Johnsen’s proposed “Strategic Pathways”plan to facilitate budget cuts caused friction within the university system and led to a “non-binding vote of faculty sentiment”of no confidence being passed 28-9 by the Faculty Senate at the University of Alaska-Anchorage in January 2017. [19] The following month the Faculty Senate of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks also passed a resolution of no-confidence related to the “Strategic Pathways”plan,by a vote of 26-12. [20] Later that year,Johnsen,in response to direction from the Board of Regents,proposed creating a single university,combining the system’s three separate universities,as a way of mitigating the budget cuts. After opposition by the three university chancellors,the University of Alaska’s Board of Regents voted to keep the system in place. Johnsen later said he acted too hastily because he was still operating in “crisis mode.” [21]
In May 2020,Johnsen was announced as the sole finalist for the job of University of Wisconsin System President. [22] The announcement was met with concerns among university system faculty and students over the way that the search had been conducted. [23] Johnsen withdrew his name from consideration for the University of Wisconsin System job in June 2020 because of the controversy.. [24]
Johnsen tendered his resignation amid blowback from the Wisconsin job search,among other reasons. [25] Johnsen's resignation was accepted by the University of Alaska Board of Regents on June 22,2020. He continued to be the president until July 1,2020. [2]
Johnsen joined Greenwood Asher and Associates (GA&A) as Vice President of Executive Search in 2022. In this role,he develops strong partnerships with GA&A and its clients,leveraging his extensive experience and passion for leadership in higher education,business,and government. Johnsen has successfully led searches to fill positions such as presidents,chancellors,vice presidents,deans,and other leadership roles within higher education institutions. [26]
Since 2022,Johnsen has been an affiliate faculty member at the UC Berkeley Center for Studies in Higher Education. [27]
Beginning in 2022,Johnsen is serving on the advisory board of the MacPherson Eye Research Institute,University of Wisconsin-Madison]. [28]
From 2020 to 2022,Johnsen was a Senior Fellow at the National Association of System Heads where he worked with leaders and scholars on a major “rethink”of the role of public university systems. Following his time at NASH,he was appointed as Affiliate Faculty at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California,Berkeley. [26] [27]
Johnsen has contributed extensively to the field of higher education through various publications. He has edited a forthcoming book titled “Public University Systems:Leveraging Scale for Higher Education”(Johns Hopkins University Press,2024). [29] He also authored the paper “Public University Systems and the Benefits of Scale,”published in the Research and Occasional Paper Series by the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California Berkeley in 2024. [30] Additionally,Johnsen co-authored the article “Leveraging the Power of Systemness to Improve the Success of Students and Society”with Martin,Zimpher,and Lane,published in Change:The Magazine of Higher Learning. [31] Furthermore,he contributed the chapter “Opportunities for Collective Bargaining to Advance Higher Education through Clarity of Role and Process”Unions on Campus:Managing Labor-Management Relationships Proactively,Fairly and Efficiently,edited by Daniel J. Julius. [32]
Johnsen is a commissioner on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education,a commissioner on the Denali Commission [33] and a member of the board of directors of the Alaska Aerospace Corporation. [34] He is past chair of the Alaska EPSCoR,chair of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education,vice-chair of the Alaska Student Loan Corporation,vice-chair of the University of Alaska Foundation,and member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of System Heads. Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School (BDEAHS) is a public high school which serves grades 9–12 in Anchorage,Alaska,United States. It is part of the Anchorage School District. The current principal is Ron Brown. East's mascot is the Thunderbird,and the school colors are red and blue. With an enrollment of 1,765 students as of the 2019–2020 school year,East High School is the second largest school in Alaska,after West Anchorage High School,which enrolled 1,772 students in the same school year. In October 2020,it was decided by the Anchorage School District Board to rename East Anchorage High School as Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School after the late Bettye Davis.
Michael James Dunleavy is an American educator and politician serving since 2018 as the 12th governor of Alaska. A Republican,he was a member of the Alaska Senate from 2013 to 2018. He defeated former U.S. senator Mark Begich in the 2018 gubernatorial election after incumbent governor Bill Walker dropped out of the race. He was reelected in 2022.
The UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) is an interdisciplinary research unit within the College of Letters &Science,Division of Social Science,dedicated to research,teaching,and discussion of labor and employment issues. It was founded in 1945 as the UCLA Institute of Industrial Relations. It is one of the two research programs in the University of California system along with the UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. The 2018 Alaska gubernatorial election took place on November 6,2018,to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of Alaska. In the primaries for recognized political parties,candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run separately. The winners of each respective primary for governor and lieutenant governor then become a joint ticket in the general election for their political party. Incumbent Independent governor Bill Walker was seeking re-election in what was originally a three-way race between Walker,Republican former Alaska state senator Mike Dunleavy,and Democratic former Alaska U.S. Senator Mark Begich. Despite Walker dropping out on October 19,2018,and endorsing Begich,Dunleavy won in what was the only gubernatorial gain by a Republican candidate in 2018. As of 2024,this was the last time the Governor's office in Alaska changed partisan control. Walker later unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Alaska in 2022.

The 2020 Alaska mid-air collision occurred at approximately 8:27 a.m. on July 31,2020,when a de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver collided with a Piper PA-12 over the Kenai Peninsula,Alaska,approximately two miles northeast of Soldotna Airport,near mile 91.5 of the Sterling Highway. Most of the wreckage landed about 200 yards (180 m) from the road. Alaska State Representative Gary Knopp was piloting one of the aircraft and was killed in the accident.

The race began on Sunday,March 7,2021,in Anchorage,Alaska. 46 mushers participated in the race including past winners and noted racers Aliy Zirkle,Martin Buser,Dallas Seavey,Peter Kaiser,Joar Leifseth Ulsom,and Nicolas Petit.
Jane Ruth Angvik is a politician and community organizer in Alaska. She served on the Anchorage Charter Commission and the Anchorage Assembly. Angvik was the Director of Lands in the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Commerce and Economic Development. She is a member of the Alaska Women's Hall of Fame.
