The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas are the sports teams that represent the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Alberta athletics teams have won a total of 101 national championships, including 84 in U Sports sanctioned sports, making it one of the most successful programs in the country.
Dave Fennell is a Canadian former defensive lineman for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Leo Blanchard is a former professional Canadian football offensive lineman who played between 1979 and 1991 in the Canadian Football League (CFL), mainly for the Edmonton Eskimos, but also for the Calgary Stampeders. Blanchard grew up in Edmonton, and played football in high school at Queen Elizabeth Composite High School. Blanchard played Canadian university football for the Alberta Golden Bears between 1977-78. He played for the Eskimos from 1979-87. He was named CFL All-Star every year from 1982 to 1986 and was a part of five Grey Cup championship teams with the Eskimos. He later worked as offensive line coach for the junior Victoria Rebels.
Leon Lyszkiewicz is a former Canadian football defensive lineman who played ten seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for five different teams.
Gordon "Gord" Hinse is a professional Canadian football offensive lineman. He last played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He was drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the second round of the 2009 CFL Draft and signed a four-year deal with an option in 2013. He played CIS football for the Alberta Golden Bears - the University of Alberta team where he was named a Canada West all-star and Academic All-Canadian.

Chris Morris is a Canadian former professional Canadian football offensive lineman who is the president and CEO for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for 14 seasons and 237 regular season games as a member of the Elks and is a three-time Grey Cup champion. He also served as head coach for the University of Alberta's football team, the Alberta Golden Bears, for 12 years.
The Alberta Rugby Football Union was formed on September 25, 1911, and governed the newly emerging and evolving sport of football in the province for over 2 decades before it was disbanded in 1936. First the Calgary Rugby Football Union (CRFU) was created on September 29, 1908. The CRFU would play the champion from Edmonton to determine the winner of the Alberta Rugby Football League for 4 seasons from 1907 to 1910. After that the Alberta Rugby Football Union was formed in 1911. It joined the Manitoba Rugby Football Union and the Saskatchewan Rugby Football Union to form the Western Canada Rugby Football Union (WCRFU) in 1911.
Clare James Drake was a Canadian ice hockey coach. He was the most successful coach in Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's hockey history. In 28 years as the head coach of the University of Alberta men's ice hockey team, he coached the Alberta Golden Bears to six University Cup championships and 17 Canada West conference championships. The "dean of coaching," Clare developed the game for more than 40 years, coaching at the high school, university, Olympic, and WHA levels. The only university coach to win a national championship in both hockey and football in the same year (1967-1968), he was instrumental in the development of the National Coaching Certification and Coach Mentorship Programs. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
Donald Joseph Barry was a Canadian football player who played for the Edmonton Eskimos. He won the Grey Cup with them in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Barry was born in Edmonton He was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 and the City of Edmonton's Hall of Fame in 2010. Don also contributed to Canadian football as a coach in Edmonton: St. Joseph’s High School; St. Anthony’s College, Edmonton Huskies, Edmonton Wildcats, and the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He was proud to have been a guest coach in the 1987 CFL Players Association All-Star Game. He was married to Susan Kay Middlemiss in 1991. They later retired to Canmore, Alberta where he died in 2014.
Dalton Smarsh is a former Canadian football player. He is known for his playing career at the University of Alberta, where he is described as "one of the most outstanding running backs in the history of Golden Bear football".
David Beard is a Canadian professional football offensive lineman for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He previously attended the University of Alberta where he played CIS football as an offensive and defensive lineman and studied kinesiology.
The Alberta Golden Bears football team represents the University of Alberta in the sport of Canadian football in U Sports. The Golden Bears have been in competition since 1910 and the team has won three Vanier Cup national championships, in 1967, 1972, and most recently in 1980. The Golden Bears have also won 18 Hardy Cup conference titles, second only to the Saskatchewan Huskies who have won 19 of them. The Golden Bears have also had three players win the Hec Crighton Trophy, with Mel Smith winning in 1971, Brian Fryer winning in 1975, and most recently Ed Ilnicki winning the award in 2017.
Jimmy Ralph is a former professional Canadian football wide receiver. He began his professional career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2017 where he won his first Grey Cup as a member of the 105th Grey Cup championship team.
Bruno Zebie is a former professional soccer player who played as a midfielder. Born in France, Zebie represented Canada at youth level.
