Jinny Jessica Jacinto (born May 8, 1976) is a Canadian contortionist, known for her work with the Cirque du Soleil, her television appearances and her role in the film Satie and Suzanne.

Early life

Jinny Jacinto was born in Montreal, Quebec on May 8, 1976.[ citation needed ] Her parents were Peruvian by birth. [1]

Performances as a contortionist

Jacinto was a member of the Cirque du Soleil as one of four 12 to 14-year-old girls working in a contortionist troupe. Jacinto said that to perform as a contortionist "You just lie down on your stomach, bring your legs over your head, lift up your chest and you smile." [1]

The four girls won a gold medal at the Festival Mondial Du Cirque De Demain in Paris in 1990. [2]

In the dance show Tono, put on by the Ontario-based Red Sky Performance at the Coups de théâtre festival, reviewer Kathryn Greenaway described her opening performance, which finished with Jacinto turning to "reveal a slender, elegant horse skull delicately balanced on her forearm" as "breathtaking". [3] Choreographer Laronde said the casting of Jacinto was to "convey the otherworldliness of the shaman", continuing "when the shaman dreams, they often dream upside down, whereas normal people dream right-side up." [4]

In 2004, Jacinto participated in an art installation by director Paulette Phillips entitled The Secret Life of Criminals. The piece was inspired by a police investigation into a woman's death. Phillips said the performance of Jacinto, who could "turn her body into a pretzel" and was "constantly in motion", suggested "the unknowable presented under a scientific gaze - Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle at play, suggesting that the observer affects the observed." Television and theatre appearances

In 2001, Jacinto was cast in Robert Lepage's production of Zulu Time in R for Romeo. The production, which looked at the issues surrounding terrorists and air travel, was scheduled to open in September in New York and was cancelled following the September 11 attacks in the US. [6]

In 2004, she appeared as part of the stage production Variété in a rag-doll performance. [7]

Jacinto appeared in an advertising campaign for Residence Inn by Marriott created by McGarryBowen of New York. In the ad, Jacinto takes an apple from a bag on the kitchen counter, giving it a tennis serve into the air and effortlessly flipping herself into a hand stand on the counter, then catching the apple on her upper foot, all to illustrate in-room grocery delivery. Zumanity (zoo-manity) was a resident cabaret-style show by Cirque du Soleil at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, placed into the theatre previously occupied by Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance (musical). The production was unveiled on September 20, 2003 and had its last performance on March 14, 2020. It was announced on November 16, 2020 that the show would be closing permanently. It is the first "adult-themed" Cirque du Soleil show, billed as "the sensual side of Cirque du Soleil" or "another side of Cirque du Soleil". Created by René Richard Cyr and Dominic Champagne, Zumanity is a departure from the standard Cirque format. Intended to be for mature adult audiences only, this show is centered on erotic song, dance, acrobatics, and comedy.

Toruk – The First Flight was a Cirque du Soleil touring production that premiered in December 2015, and was inspired by James Cameron's film Avatar. It depicts a world before the events depicted in the film. The show began its development in Montreal, Quebec, and then moved in August 2015 to the CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, Louisiana, where rehearsals took place until the show premiered. The CenturyLink Center was chosen because the massive set of the show did not fit in the Cirque du Soleil studios in Montreal.

Paramour was Cirque du Soleil's first resident musical theatre show at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway, New York City. Paramour was themed to the "Golden age of Hollywood" and followed the life of "a poet who is forced to choose between love and art". It had similar elements to Cirque du Soleil's retired Los Angeles resident show in Iris written and created by Philippe Decouflé, and had a 38-person onstage cast with actress Ruby Lewis in the lead as Indigo. Le PeTiT CiRqUe(Fr, The Little Circus) is an all-youth professional circus company based in Los Angeles, California. LPC was founded in 2012 by Nathalie Yves Gaulthier, a former child actress and competitive gymnast. LPC consists of a wide array of cirque specialists, including acrobats, aerialists, contortionists, hand balancers, and foot archers, and other performing specialists, such as vocalists, dancers, hoop dancers, and martial artists. The troupe has performed in the United States, Canada, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.
