JoAnna M. Cochenet-Gallastegui (born 14 November 1985, West Allis) is an American violinist, musician, composer and conductor.
Cochenet was born on 14 November 1985 in West Allis, Wisconsin, where she attended West Allis Central High School.[ citation needed ]
She studied a Bachelor of Music at Coe College in Cedar Rapids (Iowa) (2004–2008). [1] She subsequently earned a Master of Music in conducting and viola performance from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 2010, with the thesis "From Score Selection to the Performance: Teaching from the Podium – Discussion and Analysis of Works by Copland, Schubert, Kimber, Vivaldi, Vaughan-Williams, and Kilar". She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in conducting from the University of Nevada, Reno (Reno) in 2024, with the thesis "The Sound of Struggle: A Study and Comparison of Expressive Musical Features from Works by "Dweller" Composers (1933–1956)". [2] [3] [1]
Cochenet has trained in orchestral conducting with mentors such as Jorma Panula, Dwight Oltman, Markand Thakar, Diane Wittry, Harold Farberman, Thomas Wilkins, Christian Măcelaru, Kenneth Kiesler, and Philip Lasser, among others. [4]
As a conductor, Cochenet has led various orchestras in the United States and Ukraine, including the National Presidential Orchestra of Ukraine, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra of Baltimore, the Bard Conductors Institute Orchestra, the Omaha Symphony Orchestra of Omaha, the Mason Symphony Orchestra (George Mason University), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Orchestra. In the 2015–2016 season, Cochenet conducted the Northeast String Orchestra in New York City. [6]
In the fall of 2021, she was elected conducting fellow of the Allentown Symphony Orchestra in Allentown (Pennsylvania). [7] [8] [4]
In 2022, Cochenet conducted the UNR Symphony Orchestra of the University of Nevada, Reno, conducting several pieces by American composer Erich Korngold. [9] In 2023, Cochenet was one of the conductors of the UNR Symphony Orchestra's honor concert of the University of Nevada, Reno, conducting the Brahms Academic Festival Overture . [10]
In 2023, Cochenet served as conductor of Handel's opera Acis and Galatea at the Nevada Chamber Opera. [11] In 2023, she was also assistant conductor of Mozart's The Magic Flute at Prague Summer Nights in Prague (Czech Republic). [12] In the summer of 2023, she was guest conductor of the "Broadway and Beyond Concert" of the Accord Symphony Orchestra. [13] [14]
In 2023, she was selected as a full participating conductor for the 7th annual Cascade Conducting program in Tacoma, Washington, USA, mentored by British conductor Sarah Ioannides. In June 2024, she conducted the orchestra in Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 in the final concert of the annual program. [15] [16]
At the end of 2024, Cochenet served as assistant conductor of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra (BSO) (Bainbridge Island, WA), during the 2024-2025 season.
As a violinist and violist, Cochenet has performed, among others, with the Omaha Symphony, the Washington Chamber Orchestra, the Distant Worlds Philharmonic Orchestra or the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. She performed with the Washington Chamber Orchestra (Washington, D.C.) as a viola in the 2020–2021 season, under the direction of Korean-American conductor Jun Kim. [17]
In addition to orchestra conducting, as a DMA, Cochenet also teaches music at the university. She was a lecturer in music history and literature in the Music Faculty at George Mason University. [18] She has also been a teaching assistant the University of Nevada-Reno (School of Music). [19] She has also been a lecturer at Levine School of Music. [20] From 2021 she teaches in the Music Faculty at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). [21]
