Joaquin Zihuatanejo (born 1971 in Dallas, Texas) is an American slam poet and teacher. In 2004, Zihuatanejo competed in the National Poetry Slam as part of the Dallas Poetry Slam team, which placed third. [1] He also appeared on HBO's Def Poetry in 2005. [2] In 2008, he won the Individual World Poetry Slam and was the winner of the World Cup of Poetry Slam in 2009. [2] He is a featured faculty member at the 2018 Conference on Poetry and Teaching at The Frost Place in Franconia, NH. Currently, Zihuatanejo resides near his hometown of Dallas with his wife and two daughters. [2] Outside of poetry, Zihuatanejo taught English and creative writing for seven years. [2]
Zihuatanejo regularly visits Middle and High Schools like New Tech High and Coppell High School. One teacher, Danae Boyd says "Zihuatanejo is an inspiration to all of our students. He encourages them and shows them the true beauty of poetry."
On April 6, 2022, Zihuatanejo was named the first Poet Laureate of the City of Dallas. [3]

A poetry slam is a competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges. While formats can vary, slams are often loud and lively, with audience participation, cheering and dramatic delivery. Dame Carol Ann Duffy is a Scottish poet and playwright. David Mercier Parsons was born on April 16, 1943, in Villa Rica, Georgia, and is an American author, poet, and educator. Raised in Austin, Texas, he was named by the Texas State Legislature in 2011 to a one-year term as Poet Laureate of Texas, commemorated by the publication of David M. Parsons New & Selected Poems by the Texas Christian University Press. His most recent book is the poetry collection Reaching for Longer Water. Parsons holds a BBA from Texas State University and an MA from the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program where he studied poetry and literature with Edward Hirsch, Stanley Plumly, Richard Howard, Robert Pinsky and Howard Moss.
