A former cook in a Hollywood restaurant. Lando first came to the attention of casting directors in the role of heartthrob Jake Harrison on the soap opera One Life to Live (1990-1992). That job led to the co-starring role as backwoodsman/love interest of Jane Seymour, Byron Sully, on the television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993–1998).

When he played Byron Sully in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993), he insisted on doing almost all his own stunts. He said doing his own stunt work made the character feel more real to him. In addition, Joe admitted that some stunts, such as eating worms and running on top of a moving train, were things that he would probably never have an opportunity to do again.

Joe continues work with actress and friend Jane Seymour. Co-starring in Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman: The Movie (1999), Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: The Heart Within (2001), Perfectly Prudence (2011), Dr. Quinn, Morphine Woman with Jane Seymour (2014), Friendsgiving (2020), A Christmas Spark (2022) and the award-winning audio book "The Road Ahead".

His heritage is Italian/Russian/Polish. He was named one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" in 1993.
