John Andrew King (born May 10,1964,in Birmingham,England) is a Barbadian politician and entertainer. He currently serves as a senator in the Senate of Barbados since January 2022. [1] He has also served as a Member of Parliament for St Philip West. [2]
John Andrew King was born on May 10,1964,in Birmingham to Barbadian parents. He attended Ebenezer primary school. After his primary education,he obtained a degree in Social Work from the University of the West Indies.
King has had a long career as a singer,primarily in the calypso and soca genres. He made his singing debut at Crop Over in 1985,initially using the stage name Johnny Ma Boy. [3] He is a two-time Barbados Calypso Monarch and has released six solo albums,he won the Caribbean Song Contest which was held in Trinidad and Tobago in 1992 with "Hold You In A Song" which he did with Alison Hinds https://www.caribbean-beat.com/issue-47/standing-for-something King has also written songs for other artists and bands,including Atlantik.
During the 2018 Barbadian general election,King ran for the House of Assembly of Barbados and was elected. He was elected through the Barbados Labour Party replacing David Estwick who was a Minister of Agriculture. [4] In May 2018,he was appointed Minister of Creative Economy,Culture,and Sports in the Mia Mottley administration. [5]

Spouge is a style of Barbadian popular music created by Jackie Opel in the 1960s. It is primarily a fusion of Jamaican ska with Trinidadian calypso,but is also influenced by a wide variety of musics from the British Isles and United States,including sea shanties,hymns,and spirituals. Spouge instrumentation originally consisted of cowbell,bass guitar,trap set,and various other electronic and percussion instruments,later augmented by saxophone,trombone,and trumpets. Of these,the cowbell and the guitar are widely seen as the most integral part of the instrumentation,and are said to reflect the African origin of much of Barbadian music.
The dollar has been the currency of Barbados since 1935. Globally its currency has the ISO 4217 code BBD,however,unofficially in Barbados the International vehicle registration code BDS is also commonly used,a currency code that is otherwise reserved for Bangladesh outside Barbados. As such the present Barbados dollar has the official ISO 4217 code of BB which matches the [dot] .bb Cc-TLD domain names classification for Barbados under ISO 3166,plusD for dollar in the foreign exchange market. The Barbadian dollar is considered as a currency which can be divided into 100 cents,though the 1 cent coin is in the process of being phased out.
Crop Over is a traditional harvest festival which began in Barbados,having had its early beginnings on the sugar cane plantations during slavery.
Anthony Carter,better known as Mighty Gabby or simply Gabby,is a Barbadian calypsonian and folk singer,and a Cultural Ambassador for the island of Barbados.
Stedson Ewart Wiltshire,better known by the sobriquet of Red Plastic Bag,RPB,or merely Bag,is a calypsonian from Barbados. He has won the Barbadian calypso monarch competition a record ten times. Hailing from the eastern,rural Barbadian parish of Saint Philip,RPB became one of few performers from that region in the island to become successful. He carries a large support group of fans that show up to cheer him on from Stand C when he performs against other calypsonians at Barbados National Stadium.
George William Lamming OCC was a Barbadian novelist,essayist,and poet. He first won critical acclaim for In the Castle of My Skin,his 1953 debut novel. He also held academic posts,including as a distinguished visiting professor at Duke University and a visiting professor in the Africana Studies Department of Brown University,and lectured extensively worldwide.
Mia Amor Mottley,is a Barbadian politician and attorney who has served as the eighth prime minister of Barbados since 2018 and as Leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008. Mottley is the first woman to hold either position. She is also Barbados' first prime minister under its republican system,following constitutional changes she introduced that abolished the country's constitutional monarchy.
Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago formally established diplomatic relations on Barbados' national date of independence,30 November 1966. The large Barbadian diaspora around the globe and wide-scale availability of International television covered on the local cable service and DirectTV has meant that Barbadians have always been up to date on international trends. Barbadians now follow a wide cross-section of sport from around the world. In recent years,the Barbadian government has implemented a policy of sport-based tourism. Including the hosting of the 2007 Cricket World Cup and various other events locally. Beyond this,the Barbadian calendar has many sporting events throughout the year.
Barbados–Brazil relations are the foreign relations between Barbados and Brazil. Barbados and Brazil established diplomatic relations on 26 November 1971. Brazil has a resident Embassy in Hastings,Christ Church;while Barbados,which traditionally accredited its Ambassador in Caracas as its non-resident Ambassador to Brazil,opened an actual embassy in Brasília,Brazil on 27 April 2010. Relations between both nations have steadily increased between both nations,especially during 2010. Barbados and Brazil are members of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Sir Philip Greaves,KA is a Barbadian retired politician who served as the 5th deputy prime minister of Barbados from 1 June 1987 until 6 September 1994 under Lloyd Erskine Sandiford. He later served as acting governor-general of Barbados from 1 July 2017 until 8 January 2018.
General elections were held in Barbados on 24 May 2018. The result was a landslide victory for the opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP),which won all 30 seats in the House of Assembly,resulting in BLP leader Mia Mottley becoming the country's first female Prime Minister. The BLP's victory was the first time a party had won every seat in the House of Assembly. Previously,the most one-sided result for a Barbadian election had been in 1999,when the BLP won 26 of the 28 seats. The BLP's 73.5 percent vote share was also the highest on record.
A by-election was held in the Barbadian constituency of St George North on November 11,2020 following the resignation of incumbent BLP Member of Parliament Gline Clarke,who has represented the constituency for the past 26 years,to accept the post of Barbados High Commissioner to Canada. It was the first election to take place since Prime Minister Mia Mottley's governing Barbados Labour Party won all seats in the House of Assembly in the 2018 Barbadian general election.
