John D. Hedengren (born July 3, 1977) is an American chemical engineer, professor at Brigham Young University, and researcher known for his work in process control, dynamic optimization, and machine learning applications in engineering.
Hedengren has published on physics-informed machine learning for optimizing energy systems, unmanned aircraft, and drilling processes. [1] His work includes the development of APMonitor Optimization Suite, Gekko Optimization Suite, and the Temperature Control Lab. [2] Hedengren runs the APMonitor YouTube Channel with educational videos on control, optimization, and machine learning for engineers. [3]
Hedengren's professional service includes IEEE CSS Chair of Control Education, [4] CACHE Trustee, [5] and Communications Chair for the American Automatic Control Council. [6] He was a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished Lecturer for 2018–2019. [7]

Hedengren earned NCAA All-American honors in Cross-Country and was named CoSIDA Academic All-America five times, more than any athlete in BYU history. He was induced into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015. [11] His daughter, Jane Hedengren, has committed to run for Brigham Young University and his son, Isaac Hedengren, is on the BYU Mens' Track and Field team. [12]

Advanced process monitor (APMonitor) is a modeling language for differential algebraic (DAE) equations. It is a free web-service or local server for solving representations of physical systems in the form of implicit DAE models. APMonitor is suited for large-scale problems and solves linear programming, integer programming, nonlinear programming, nonlinear mixed integer programming, dynamic simulation, moving horizon estimation, and nonlinear model predictive control. APMonitor does not solve the problems directly, but calls nonlinear programming solvers such as APOPT, BPOPT, IPOPT, MINOS, and SNOPT. The APMonitor API provides exact first and second derivatives of continuous functions to the solvers through automatic differentiation and in sparse matrix form.
