John D. Robinson is a congenital quadruple amputee, author, entrepreneur and disability advocate from New York. He is the subject of a public television documentary, "Get Off Your Knees: The John Robinson Story", along with a companion autobiography, "Get Off Your Knees: A Story of Faith, Courage, and Determination", [1] published in 2009.

Biography

Born in Binghamton, New York in 1968, Robinson was born without arms and legs due to unknown reasons. Since this was after 1961, it was not a birth defect caused by Thalidomide. He graduated from The Derryfield School in Manchester NH in 1986, and received his degree from SI Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in 1990.

Advocacy Work & Media Coverage

Since 2011, he's served as managing partner and CEO of Our Ability, [2] founded by him in 2010, which provides inclusive workforce and employment consulting, mentoring, workshops, keynotes and seminars on disability and diversity; and building coalitions among New York State businesses interested in both hiring and building supplier diversity of businesses owned by individuals with disabilities.

He also formed Journey Along the Erie Canal [3] and Journey Along the Scottish Canals [4] Challenges in 2013 and 2018, respectively, [5] as well as the New York Business Leadership Network [6] in 2016.

John Robinson was featured on ABC News in November 2009. [7] Media coverage of Robinson includes WNYT , [8] WRGB, [9] WTEN, [10] [11] and the Times Union, [12] and the Obama White House. [13]

John Robinson was awarded the Capital Region Chamber Champion Award in 2018, [14] the New York State Assembly Disability Champion Award in 2018, and is a 2014 White House Champion of Change

The Erie Canal Museum is a historical museum about the Erie Canal located in Syracuse, New York. The museum was founded in 1962 and is a private, non-profit corporation. It is housed in the Syracuse Weighlock Building dating from 1850. The Syracuse Weighlock Building was in operation as a weighlock from 1850 to 1883. In 1883 the canal decided to stop charging tolls. The weighlock building was essentially used as a big, elaborate scale to weigh the boats traveling on the Erie Canal and determine how much each boat would pay for a toll. Today the museum includes not only artifacts from the Erie Canal, but also a gallery of present canal life. It is the mission of the museum to help people to learn the rich history of the Erie Canal and that it is not just a thing of the past, but still very much exists today in different forms.

Dave Barr is an American veteran of the Vietnam War and a motorcyclist best known for being the first double amputee to circumnavigate the globe. He lives in Bodfish, California where he runs a motorcycle tour company. He is also the author of several books and was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000.

Amy Palmiero-Winters is a below-knee amputee who currently holds eleven world records in various events. In 2010, she was awarded the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States and the ESPN ESPY Award as the top female athlete with a disability in the world.

Les Autres sport classification is system used in disability sport for people with locomotor disabilities not included in other classification systems for people with physical disabilities. The purpose of this system is to facilitate fair competition between people with different types of disabilities, and to give credibility to disability sports. It was designed and managed by International Sports Organization for the Disabled (ISOD) until the 2005 merger with IWAS, when management switched to that organization. Classification is handled on the national level by relevant sport organizations.
