John Spencer Gannon (born 18 December 1966) is an English former professional footballer, featuring mainly for Sheffield United.

In recent years he has held coaching roles at clubs including Mansfield Town, Chester City, Notts County and Leeds United. [3] He is currently working as a scout with Manchester City. [3]

As a player, he started at Wimbledon whilst also featuring for the Republic of Ireland at youth level. [4] Gannon was part of the Wimbledon squad that went all the way to the 1988 FA Cup Final where they achieved a shock 1–0 win over Liverpool, although he didn't feature on the day. [3]

With first team matches limited at the Dons, Gannon left for Sheffield United thereby joining his former Wimbledon boss Dave Bassett, initially on loan during the 1988/1989 season, before signing permanently on a free transfer for the start of the 1989/90 season. Gannon was particularly strong with his left foot and also took corners and free kicks, setting up goals regularly during Gannons time at United. Gannon was part of the Sheffield United team that achieved two successive promotions and was a regular player in the old First Division for the Blades. [3]

The 1988–89 season was Manchester United's 87th season in the Football League, and their 14th consecutive season in the top division of English football. Despite finishing second in the 1987–88 season, Manchester United did not play in the UEFA Cup in 1988–89 due to the ban on English clubs in Europe since the Heysel stadium disaster.

The 1988–89 season was the 94th in the history of Arsenal Football Club. It began on 1 July 1988 and concluded on 30 June 1989, with competitive matches played between August and May. The club ended its 18-year wait for the league title by winning the Football League First Division championship in the most closely fought title race in the competition's history. Arsenal beat Liverpool 2–0 in the final match of the season to take the title on goals scored, as both clubs shared the same points total and goal difference. During the season Arsenal also enjoyed success in the Football League Centenary Trophy, but exited the League Cup to Liverpool in the third round and fell at the same stage of the FA Cup to West Ham United.
