John Mell (d. 1579) was one possessor of the keepership of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, or "Bedlam", who began his role as keeper in 1576, [1] following Richard Munnes (a draper) and then Edward Rest (a grocer).
Mell's occupation is unknown, but he was appointed directly by "the lord mayor and court of aldermen," and was responsible to report to the "three surveyors of Bedlem." [1] Mell was in part responsible for the poor state of the hospital, as he dishonestly refused to give account of any legacies the hospital received, and even "discouraged the benevolent from giving at all," and was "grossly insult[ing]" [1] towards the surveyors. In July 1579, Mell was reported to have been dismissed, due to his abuse towards the surveyors and by committing "other disorders jointly with his wife." [2] Defiant at the dismissal, Mell resisted until his death in December of that same year, at which point the post was freed and given to Roland Slethord (a clothworker). [2]

Robert Mylne was a Scottish architect and civil engineer, particularly remembered for his design for Blackfriars Bridge in London. Born and raised in Edinburgh, he travelled to Europe as a young man, studying architecture in Rome under Piranesi. In 1758, he became the first Briton to win the triennial architecture competition at the Accademia di San Luca. This made his name known in London, and won him the rivalry of fellow Scot Robert Adam.

Richard Watts (1529–1579) was a successful businessman and MP for Rochester, South East England, in the 1570s. He supplied rations for the English Navy as deputy victualler and supervised the construction of Upnor Castle. After Queen Elizabeth I pronounced his house was satis after a visit in 1573, the house was thereafter known as Satis House. Famed locally for his philanthropy, he died on 10 September 1579, leaving money in his will to establish the Richard Watts Charity and Six Poor Travellers House in Rochester High Street. He is buried, in accordance with his will, in Rochester Cathedral.
Colonel Thomas de Burgh, always named in his lifetime as Thomas Burgh, was an Anglo-Irish military engineer, architect, and Member of the Parliament of Ireland who served as Surveyor General of Ireland (1700–1730) and designed a number of the large public buildings of Dublin including the old Custom House (1704–6), Trinity College Library (1712–33), Dr Steevens' Hospital (1719), the Linen Hall (1722), and the Royal Barracks.

The equestrian statue of Edward Horner stands inside St Andrew's Church in the village of Mells in Somerset, south-western England. It was designed by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, as a memorial to Edward Horner, who died of wounds in the First World War. The sculpture was executed by Sir Alfred Munnings.
