John Minko

John A. Minko (born January 31, 1953) is an American sports radio and television personality. He was a "20/20 sports anchor" on radio station WFAN in New York City and had worked there from its inception in 1987 until 2020. [1] Nicknamed "Coach" by his coworkers, Minko provides listeners with up-to-the-minute sports news, Sundays through Thursdays between the hours of 10am and 5pm (Monday-Thursday) and 6am and 12pm (Sunday). He has also, at times, been called the "Dean of Updates", a moniker in recognition of his seniority. On April 2, 2020, Minko had said that April 3 was his last day on WFAN.

Minko has been a resident of New Milford, New Jersey. [2]

Broadcasting career

Minko appears with the Mike's On: Francesa on the Fan crew, preceded by Mike and the Mad Dog on the YES Network. [3] which ran from 1989 thru 2014. Minko is often the butt of jokes made by host Mike Francesa, including false accusations of making critical remarks regarding other members of the radio station or claims that he has boasted about a personal achievement.. He is also teased about his button-down personality and inability to ad-lib during his updates. Joe Benigno credits Minko for teaching him to read at a third-grade level.

From 2000 to 2009, Minko was the play-by-play voice of Army football on WABC 770 and WEPN. In 2010, he served as co-host of Army football's pre-game show. [4] He also served as the update person for Francesa's nationally syndicated NFL Now show. More recently, Minko has served as the fill-in radio voice of the New Jersey Nets. Minko also hosted a short-lived 1988 WFAN show, Minko Morning Zoo. [5] His trademark calls are "Bingo!" and "He rings the bell." Minko is a graduate of Butler University.[ citation needed ]

John has been the radio play by play announcer for St. John's Red Storm college basketball since November 11, 2008. [6]

Minko also co-hosts a weekly video blog called the Minko Minute with Evan Roberts. They usually talk about whatever Mink wants at first then Evan asks Minko a love question. These so far have only come from a male viewer. The usual response from Minko is to get the woman in question flowers and chocolate. More recently his advice has been to take the woman in question to a nice Broadway show. There have been a few guest appearances including the most recent appearance by Ian Eagle.

WFAN is a commercial radio station licensed to New York, New York, carrying a sports radio format known as "Sports Radio 66 AM and 101.9 FM" or "The Fan". Owned by Audacy, Inc., the station serves the New York metropolitan area while its 50,000-watt clear channel signal can be heard at night throughout much of the eastern United States and Canada. WFAN's studios are located in the Hudson Square neighborhood of lower Manhattan and its transmitter is located on High Island in the Bronx. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WFAN is simulcast over WFAN-FM, and is available online via Audacy.

Bob Heussler, currently resides in Hamden, Connecticut and is a radio sports broadcaster at WFAN in New York for thirty years. He made regular appearances on the Mike and the Mad Dog and Mike's On programs since 1993. He currently is the radio play-by-play voice of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun. Additionally, Bob broadcasts Fairfield Stags men's basketball on WVOF and has done play-by-play for University of Connecticut basketball and football for the Connecticut Radio Network. Heussler's radio call of Tate George's game-winning shot in the 1990 East Regional semifinals against Clemson is one of the most famous in college basketball history. Heussler is a 1977 graduate of the University of Bridgeport.

Jerry Recco is an American sports radio personality, serving as a morning anchor on Boomer and Gio program on sports radio station WFAN in New York City. He has been with the station since 1997. As of 2009, Recco also reports sports in the morning for WFAN's sister station all-news WINS. Born in Brooklyn and raised in New Jersey, Recco received a BA in Media Arts from Jersey City State College, after a 3-year stint at the now defunct Upsala College. He began his career at WFAN first as an intern and then moved up to producer and board operator, before taking over as the overnight anchor. He left WFAN for a short time to disc jockey at WHTG-FM in New Jersey and anchor sports at Sportsphone before returning in April 2000 as part-time anchor and full-time board operator for the Mike and the Mad Dog show. Recco is an avid golfer and Dallas Cowboys fan.

Mike's On: Francesa on the FAN was a sports radio talk show airing on New York City station WFAN, hosted by Mike Francesa. The show debuted on September 3, 2008, as the successor to Francesa's previous program, Mike and the Mad Dog, which was broadcast from 1989 to 2008 and made Francesa and his partner Chris Russo the first nationally known team in sports radio. When simulcast on television, Mike's On is broadcast under the title The Mike Francesa Show; it was simulcast on the YES Network from its inception until January 31, 2014. On March 24, 2014, Francesa signed an agreement to occasionally simulcast a portion of the show on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2. The arrangement with Fox Sports ended September 11, 2015 with Mike taking the blame for the project not succeeding. Francesa announced his retirement and the final show aired on December 15, 2017.

Joe & Evan is a sports talk radio show hosted by Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts, originally broadcast on weekday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on New York radio stations WFAN-AM and WFAN-FM. Originally the midday hosts, Joe & Evan were promoted to "afternoon drive" replacing longtime host Mike Francesa who semi-retired in December 2019.

The New York Sports radio WFAN, first broadcast on July 1, 1987 at 1050AM replacing WHN. WFAN was the first all sports station in the United States. The station's current frequency, 660AM. was formerly known as WNBC and first transmitted on March 2, 1922. WFAN moved to 660AM at 5:30PM Eastern Time on October 7, 1988 when WNBC signed off for the last time.
