John D. Perdue (born June 22,1950) is an American politician who served as the 24th West Virginia State Treasurer from 1997 to 2021. [1]
Purdue was born in Boone County,West Virginia and grew up on a small farm. In 1972 he graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. Whilst at University he was active in 4-H and the Future Farmers of America,becoming a 4-H All Star.
He has a wife,Robin,with whom he has two daughters. He has many family members as well. [2]
In 1989 he became Executive Assistant to West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton,serving as a member of his staff for eight years.
In 1996 he won election as state treasurer as a member of the Democratic Party,a position he would hold for six terms. He was easily re-elected in his subsequent three elections,with no Republican even filing to run against him in 2000 and 2008.
Following Governor Joe Manchin's resignation in 2010 to take his seat in the US Senate,he stood in the subsequent gubernatorial special election. He finished fourth in the Democratic Primary,which was won by Earl Ray Tomblin.
His re-election in 2012 was closer than previous elections,winning 55% of the vote compared to his previous lowest of 60%. In 2016 he was re-elected with 50.4% of the vote,whilst Republican Donald Trump won the state in the concurrent Presidential election with 68.5% of the vote.
Following governor Jim Justice’s defection to the Republican Party in 2017,Purdue was left as the only Democrat holding statewide office in West Virginia besides Joe Manchin.
Perdue lost his bid for a seventh term in 2020 to Republican Riley Moore. [3] His 24 year tenure as treasurer is the longest in the history of the office. [4]
In December 2021 he was appointed by Joe Biden as State Executive Director for USDA's Farm Service Agency in West Virginia. [5]

Shelley Wellons Moore Capito is an American politician and retired educator serving in her second term as the junior United States senator from West Virginia,a post she has held since 2015. A member of the Republican Party,Capito served seven terms as the U.S. representative from West Virginia's 2nd congressional district from 2001 to 2015. The daughter of three-term West Virginia governor Arch Alfred Moore Jr.,she is the dean of West Virginia's congressional delegation.
Joseph Manchin III is an American politician and businessman serving as the senior United States senator from West Virginia,a seat he has held since 2010. Manchin was the 34th governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and the 27th secretary of state of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. He became the state's senior U.S. senator when Jay Rockefeller left office in 2015 and was West Virginia's only congressional Democrat until 2024,when he registered as an independent. Before entering politics,Manchin helped found and was the president of Enersystems,a coal brokerage company his family owns and operates.
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 4,2008,in 11 states and two territories. Prior to the election,eight of the total seats were held by Democrats and five by Republicans. Two governors were prohibited by term limits from seeking re-election in 2008. The only governorship to change party was the open seat in Missouri,which was won by a Democrat after being previously held by a Republican.

Carol Miller is an American farmer,educator,and politician who has represented West Virginia's 1st congressional district since 2019. The district,numbered as the 3rd district from 2019 to 2023,covers the southern half of the state,including Huntington,Charleston,Bluefield,and Beckley.
William Michael Hall is an American politician and chief of staff to the governor of West Virginia Jim Justice. He previously was a Republican member of the West Virginia Senate representing District 4 between 2006 and 2017. Hall served six terms in the West Virginia House of Delegates,representing the 14th district. In 2012,Hall was nominated by the Republican Party as its nominee for the office of West Virginia State Treasurer. He was defeated in the general election by incumbent State Treasurer John Perdue.

Primary elections took place on May 14,2024.
