John Riady (born 5 May 1985) is CEO of Lippo Karawaci and Director of the Lippo Group, [1] an investment company controlled by the Riady family; [2] Professor of Law at Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia; [3] Editor of the Jakarta Globe, an Indonesian English language newspaper founded in 2009; [4] and Director of Berita Satu Media Holdings, [5] an Indonesian media company.

Early childhood and education

Born in New York City, Riady was educated at Georgetown University where he majored in Political Philosophy and Economics. He also received his MBA from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania—graduating as a Palmer Scholar—and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University Law School. [6] He is also a member of the NY Bar Association. [7]

Pro bono appointments

In 2012, the World Economic Forum appointed Riady to its Global Agenda Council. [8] He is also on the Columbia University Law School International Advisory Board, and is Chairman of KIKAS-KADIN, [9] the US-Indonesia Bilateral Committee within the Indonesian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN).

Riady family

John Riady is the grandson of Mochtar Riady. The family controls the Lippo Group, which manages companies in property, healthcare, financial services, retail, technology and education in Asia. Its investors include GIC and Temasek, the Singapore state investment funds, Mitsui; Khazanah, the Malaysian Sovereign Wealth fund; and CVC Capital Partners, a private equity firm which tripled its money in three years by working with Lippo on the buyout of their Matahari department store chain. [10]

Lippo Karawaci or Lippo Village is a multiracial community in Tangerang, 23 km west of Jakarta, Indonesia. The township is within the Jakarta metropolitan area. Previously a swamp area, it opened in 1993 and is today a benchmark for Indonesia's other urban developments. This integrated development supports the "one-stop" living concept and combines residential condominiums, office space, education and healthcare facilities as well as commercial and entertainment areas in a strategic location and a green environment. Lippo Village has 120 km of internal roads and 250 km of drainage system networks. Population of the township is about 70,000 with over 200,000 visitors daily.

Mari Elka Pangestu, is an Indonesian economist who served as managing director of Development Policy and Partnerships in the World Bank from 2020 to 2023. The President of the World Bank, David Malpass, announced her appointment on 9 January 2020 saying that she would be responsible for development policy and partnerships in her role in the bank. Previously she served as Minister of Trade in Indonesia from October 2004 to October 2011.

Anderson Tanoto is a member of the board of trustees at Tanoto Foundation, a philanthropic organization involved in poverty alleviation through education, "empowerment" and "the enhancement of the quality of lives". Tanoto is the youngest son of businessman and philanthropist Sukanto Tanoto. Meikarta is a planned city project in Indonesia, which is aimed to become a modern city of international scale. The township is being developed by PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency. Hasyim Ning was Indonesian tycoon who owned the Indonesian Service Company, an assembler company that holds a European-American automotive brand license. He was jokingly referred to as the "Indonesian Henry Ford" in the press.
