Bishop John Rooney VG, was an Irish-born Roman Catholic priest who served as bishop in South Africa.
Rooney was born in 1844 in Edenderry, County Offaly, he attended Carlow College before going to All Hallows College in Dublin, to be trained as priest for the Cape of Good Hope Diocese. Following All Hallows, he studied at Propaganda College in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1867. [1] He was in 1886 ordained titular Bishop of Sergiopolis, and coadjutor to Bishop John Leonard, [2] whom he succeeded in 1908 as Bishop of Cape Colony, South Africa. He resigned as bishop in 1925. All Hallows College was a college of higher education in Dublin. It was founded in 1842 and was run by the Vincentians from 1892 until 2016. On 23 May 2014, it was announced that it was closing because of declining student enrollment. The sale of the campus in Drumcondra to Dublin City University was announced on 19 June 2015 and completed on 8 April 2016. The college closed on 30 November 2016, becoming the All Hallows Campus of Dublin City University.

Right Rev. John Leonard, D.D., was an Irish born priest who served in Ireland and South Africa. Born in Dublin on 15 January 1829, he matriculated in St. Patrick's College, Maynooth in 1849. He was ordained a priest in 1855 by Archbishop of Dublin Paul Cullen. Dr. Leonard was curate at Blanchardstown, Co. Dublin, when appointed to succeed Dr. Grimley in Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Town, as Vicar Apostolic of the Cape of Good Home and Titular Bishop of Corada, serving from 1872 until he died on 19 February 1908, he was succeeded by Dr. John Rooney as Bishop.
