John Toal is a BBC Radio Ulster and BBC Radio 3 presenter.

A native of Newry he has been a radio presenter since 1989, shortly after he left Queen's University, Belfast where he read for a degree in music. [1]

His Saturday morning radio programme won a gold award at the 2015 Phonographic Performance Ireland (PPI) Radio Awards and another gold award at the 2016 Celtic Media Festival. [1] . He has won many awards for his shows, at both the IMROs and Celtic Media Awards. He won the Gold Award for his magazine show ‘Saturday with John Toal’ for 3 years in a row, in 2023, 2024 & 2025. He has won 10 Gold awards in the last 11 years, making him one of the most successful presenters ever in BBC NI Radio.


On television he has presented Trad Ar Fad! and the BBC NI Last Night of the Proms. [2] [3]
