In 1989, Dissection was looking for a final member to make the band a four-piece group. Mattias Johansson, their rhythm guitarist at the time, was just a session player and wasn't dedicated to the band. They found Zwetsloot and Dissection was formed, then later went to play their first show in 1991.[3]
Zwetsloot brought a unique flavor to the band with his knowledge in classical music and theory[citation needed] helped the band form many of its dual harmonies. He was the rhythm guitarist while Nödtveidt played the harmonies as the lead guitarist. He came to be the main composer for most of the songs on the album, behind Nödtveidt. He also brought his knowledge and technique of classical guitar to the table,[citation needed] composing three short solo tracks and interludes for the songs.
His solos compositions for the band include: "Crimson Towers," "Into Infinite Obscurity," and "Feathers Fell." The latter two have had various arrangements featured on other Dissection albums.[4][5] The end of "Heaven's Damnation" contains a brief classical arrangement of the song's main melody, this is also composed and played by him.
When the band played live shows, or rehearsed to work on the new album, Zwetsloot showed up late or skipped meetings altogether. He caused the band to cancel gigs because of his absence. Due to him not taking the band as seriously as the other members did, they all decided it would be appropriate for Zwetsloot to leave the band. In 1994 he was replaced by Johan Norman.[3]
Though he wasn't a part of Dissection for their second album, Storm of the Light's Bane, he shares writing credits on two of the songs.[6] Nödtveidt and Norman became the primary songwriters for the band after Zwetsloot's departure.
After Dissection
Having left Dissection after The Somberlain, he played for Nifelheim from 1994 to 1998.[7]
He also started his own band Cardinal Sin in 1995.[citation needed] In typical Zwetsloot fashion,[citation needed] he composed a Classical piece for Cardinal Sin's only EP. The band split in 1996, but returned for sometime in 2003.[citation needed]
Zwetsloot was the original lead guitarist of the band The Haunted from Aug-Sept 1996.
Zwetsloot as John John on guitar was also in the Norwegian band Fuck You All from 2002 to 2009.
Timothy S. "Ripper" Owens is an American heavy metal singer who currently performs with KK's Priest, Spirits of Fire, the Three Tremors and A New Revenge. He first gained attention as the lead singer of Judas Priest and then Iced Earth. Storm of the Light's Bane is the second full-length album by Swedish black metal band Dissection. It was released on 17 November 1995 by Nuclear Blast. This would be the band's last full-length album before frontman Jon Nödtveidt's 1997 incarceration for the felony murder of Josef ben Meddour. It would not be until 2006 that they would release their third and final album Reinkaos, which was followed by the breakup of the band and Nödtveidt's suicide shortly after. As with the band's debut album, Kristian 'Necrolord' Wåhlin created the artwork.

Erik Martin "Axe" Axenrot is a Swedish death metal drummer, best known as the former drummer for progressive metal band Opeth (2005-2021). Since 2004, he is the drummer for Bloodbath. Known for his intricate playing style, his drumming has been highly praised by Opeth members and fans, with Mikael Åkerfeldt calling him "a joy to play with." Axenrot has also been jokingly referred to as The Lord of the Rings character Legolas by band members and fans.

The band dedicated the album to Euronymous, who had been murdered in August the same year. This is the only album that features the band's original lineup. The artwork was created by Kristian 'Necrolord' Wåhlin. The album was composed and arranged between 1989 and 1993, and was recorded between 1 and 6 March 1993.

Per Christian Liljegren, is a Swedish musician, best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the Christian melodic power metal band Narnia. Liljegren is also the frontman of the metal bands Audiovision, Divinefire, Flagship and Wisdom Call. He is also the owner of the Liljegren Records label which features bands such as Divinefire, Crimson Moonlight, Sanctifica, Grimmark, Harmony, Veni Domine and Majestic Vanguard. He changed his last name to Rivel by choosing to take his wife's last name when they were married. After the divorce in 2008 he changed his name back to Liljegren.

Maha Kali is an EP by the Swedish extreme metal band Dissection. It was the first release after the rebirth of Dissection, shortly after Jon Nödtveidt was released from prison. It represents the band's change from a melodic black/death sound to a more Gothenburg-based sound of melodic death metal. The song "Maha Kali" also appears on the live DVD Rebirth of Dissection, and was re-recorded and included on Dissection's last full-length album, Reinkaos; "Unhallowed " is a re-recording from Storm of the Light's Bane. Maha Kali entered the Swedish charts at number 50.
Live Legacy is a live album by Swedish black metal band Dissection, released in 2003 by Nuclear Blast. It was recorded during a show at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany on 8 August 1997. It was first released as a bootleg called Frozen in Wacken, which featured the art of romantic painter Antoine Wiertz on the cover. The bootleg also includes the song "Night's Blood" that was omitted from the official release due to errors in the recording.
