Jon Hanssen-Bauer (born 5 April 1952) is a Norwegian social anthropologist, peace researcher and diplomat.
After taking his mag.art. degree in social anthropology at the University of Oslo in 1982 he was hired at the Work Research Institute. From 1988 to 1993 he worked at the Norwegian Work Life Centre, and from 1993 to 2005 for the Fafo Foundation. At Fafo he started as research director and then led its Institute for International Studies from 1998. [1]

The Work Research Institute (WRI), formerly known as the Institute of Work Psychology, is a Norwegian government-owned social science research institute in Oslo. Its purpose is to "produce systematic knowledge on working life" based on industrial and organizational psychology and other social sciences. It is part of Oslo Metropolitan University and was formerly an independent state-owned research institute from its establishment in 1964 until 2014.
The Fafo Research Foundation, also known as the Fafo Foundation or just Fafo, is a Norwegian research foundation, owning a research institute: The Fafo Institute for Labour and Social Research. The institute conducts social research both in Norway and internationally. Fafo has offices in Oslo and Beijing.
Hanssen-Bauer had advised the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Middle East peace process since 1994, and was appointed as senior adviser there in 2005. After a stint as Ministry of Foreign Affairs envoy in Sri Lanka from 2006 he was a special envoy on the Middle East from 2009 before being appointed Norway's ambassador to Israel in 2015. [1]

It was founded in 1959 by a group of Norwegian researchers led by Johan Galtung, the principal founder of peace and conflict studies, who was the institute's first director. The Journal of Peace Research, the discipline's preeminent journal, is also published by the institute.
