Jon Sortland (born September 12, 1973) is an American musician, record producer and video director, currently playing the drums for indie rock band The Shins. Sortland has also played drums, bass, keyboards and backing vocals in the band Broken Bells. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Sortland also writes and performs in his own bands, EV Kain and Cigar. Sortland is endorsed by Paiste [10] and C&C Drums. [11]

History

In the late 1980s, Sortland started The Circus Tents, [12] a northern California skate punk band with Matt Wedgley (The Force, Dirty Filthy Mugs, Viva Hate), Scot Pickering, Jeff Jones and Chad Cox. The band self-released their 12-song cassette tape in 1991, followed by their EP (Hard Up) [13] in 1992. Both releases had songs featured in several skateboarding videos ( Powell , Toy Machine ).

In 1996, Sortland formed Cigar with Rami Krayem on guitar and lead vocals, and Jason Torbert on bass. Cigar, produced by Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise, released their debut album, Speed is Relative, in 1999 on Theologian Records. [14] Throughout the 2000s, Sortland performed and recorded with several other bands and producers until starting his current band E V Kain. E V Kain released their "Clear" 7-inch in late 2012 and is currently active. The most recent release from E V Kain is a split 7-inch record with Mike Watt and The Secondmen. [15] In 2022, Cigar released their debut Fat Wreck Chords release, The Visitor. [16]

Fear Factory is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1989. Throughout the band's career, they have released ten full-length albums and have evolved through a succession of sounds, all in their main style of industrial metal. Over the years, Fear Factory has seen frequent changes in its lineup, with lead vocalist Burton C. Bell being the only consistent member for 31 years until his departure in 2020. Guitarist Dino Cazares is the only original member still in the band. The band went on hold in March 2002 following some internal disputes, but resumed activity a year later without founding member Cazares. Previous bassist Christian Olde Wolbers replaced him as the new guitarist, and bassist Byron Stroud joined the band. In April 2009, a new lineup was announced. Cigar is an American punk rock band from Eugene, Oregon, and, later, San Diego, California, United States. The Circus Tents were an American band active from 1989 to 1993 from Grass Valley, California, United States. It consisted of Matt Wedgley as the lead vocalist, Jon Sortland on drums, Chad Cox on bass, Scot Pickering and Jeff Jones on guitar. They released a 12 song self-titled cassette tape in 1990 and a 4 song 7" record titled Hard Up on Insurrection Records in 1992. They had a couple of songs featured on early Powell Peralta skate videos for Chris Senn. They achieved international publicity when Billie Joe Armstrong put a Circus Tents sticker on his guitar and AFI covered their song "Open Your Eyes" on their record Answer That and Stay Fashionable. The Circus Tents also recorded the song "I Hate Cops" by The Authorities for an unreleased tribute album to The Authorities, which also featured the bands Screeching Weasel and The Meatmen.
