Jonah David (born October 30, 1977) is a drummer/percussionist who has performed and recorded with a wide variety of musicians including Matisyahu, Costello, Roots Tonic, Josh Werner, Bill Laswell, Braindance, Joshua Nelson, King Django and the Brooklyn Funk Essentials.

Personal life

Born October 30, 1977, Jonah grew up in South Orange, New Jersey, and was introduced to music at an early age by his father. He attended Columbia High School and continued his music education at Rutgers–Newark, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and Drummers Collective. Jonah also studied at the Mason Gross School of Performing Arts and Musicians Institute. [1] [2]

Career

David started his career at Hopewell Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, playing and recording with Joshua Nelson from 1993 to 2005. He began touring extensively with reggae bands in New Jersey [3] and in 2000 toured the US with King Django, and Europe with the Brooklyn Funk Essentials. [1] While at The New School he met Josh Werner and Aaron Dugan to form Roots Tonic in 2004, the original backing band for Matisyahu until 2007. [1] Prior to forming Roots Tonic, Jonah and Josh Werner played together supporting MC's and spoken-word poets at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe [4] as well as break dancers with the band Butta. [1] During this time, Roots Tonic recorded four albums and one live DVD which include two RIAA-certified gold records with Matisyahu: Live At Stubb's and Youth, [5] and one record with Bill Laswell, Roots Tonic Meets Bill Laswell. [6] In February 2010 Jonah enlisted in the United States Navy Music Program and is currently a Petty Officer First Class Musician (MU1). To date, Jonah has been awarded the National Defense medal, Global War on Terrorism medal, and the Navy Pistol Marksmanship ribbon. [2]

Live at Stubb's is a live album by Matisyahu. It was recorded live at Stubb's in Austin, Texas on February 19, 2005 under his record label Or Music. The album debuted at number 5 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, then seven months later it debuted at number 176 on the Billboard 200. On the issue of January 7, 2006 it reached the top of on the Reggae Albums Chart, and on the issue of March 18, 2006 it reached number 30 on the Billboard 200. The album was also certified gold by the RIAA on February 27, 2006 with over 500,000 copies sold. On December 27, 2006 it was announced that Live at Stubb's was ranked 2nd on the Billboard Reggae album charts for the year. The CD contains the music video for "King Without a Crown".

<i>Youth Dub</i> 2006 remix album by Matisyahu

Youth Dub is a bonus disc released in conjunction with Matisyahu's second studio album Youth. Both discs were released on March 7, 2006. Youth Dub is included with some copies of Youth and is available as a limited edition, stand-alone album. Producer Bill Laswell made a King Tubby style dub remix of Youth, adding effects and bringing to the fore the music of the backing band Roots Tonic rather than Matisyahu's vocals. Laswell was so impressed with the band that he invited them back into his studio and teamed up for an all-instrumental dub album, Roots Tonic meets Bill Laswell.

Roots Tonic

Roots Tonic was the name of the three piece rock-reggae band best known as Matisyahu's backing band during live shows and studio recordings. The band was made up of Aaron Dugan, Josh Werner, and Jonah David. They have recorded two studio albums and a live album with Matisyahu, but the name Roots Tonic was first mentioned on the inside cover of Matisyahu's 2006 major label album Youth and its dub version, Youth Dub.

Joe Bergamini is a drummer from New Jersey in the United States. He is the co-founder of the instrumental progressive rock band 4Front. 4Front's other founder, guitarist/songwriter Zak Rizvi, went on to become a member of the classic rock group Kansas in 2016. Since 2000 Bergamini has been a member of progressive rock band Happy the Man, and appears on their 2005 album The Muse Awakens. Joseph "Ziggy" Modeliste, also known as Zigaboo, is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the funk band the Meters. Aaron Dugan Musical artist

Aaron Dugan is a guitarist, composer and songwriter originally from Philadelphia who resides in Brooklyn. Dugan has performed and recorded with a wide variety of musicians and producers including Roots Tonic, Matisyahu, Trevor Hall, Bootsy Collins, Amy Carrigan, John Zorn, Maya Dunietz, Chris Tunkel, Mark Guiliana and Bill Laswell. Dugan has clinched two Gold Records as lead guitarist on Matisyahu's Live at Stubb's and Youth, and has recorded two solo albums featuring his own compositions.

Mark Schulman American musician and corporate speaker (born 1961)

Mark Schulman is an American musician and corporate speaker. He performed with Cher as her tour drummer on her D2K Tour. Schulman is also a session drummer as well as a music producer, audio engineer and co-owner of West Triad Studios, a recording venue located in Venice, California.

Joey Muha Canadian drummer

Joey Muha is a Canadian drummer, best known for his YouTube videos, many of which have millions of views and have been featured on multiple websites. He is a member of the industrial metal band Threat Signal, death metal band Jungle Rot. and pop band Liteyears. He has also played for bands associated with Nuclear Blast Records, Victory Records, MapleMusic Recordings, etc.
