Evans grew up near Trefriw, in the Conwy valley in North Wales. He is married with two children and lived near Cheltenham in the Cotswolds, where he had a yard. He now lives near Broadway in Worcestershire.
Evans has been competing internationally in eventing for more than twenty years. Although brought up in Wales, Evans represents Ireland, thanks to his grandfather having been born in Northern Ireland, allowing him to hold an Irish passport.
Evans competed at the 2005 European Eventing Championships where he was placed 7th in team eventing and 40th in individual eventing competition. In 2015, he helped lead the Irish team to the nation's first-ever Irish FEI Eventing Nations' Cup victory in the Boekelo Nations' Cup. [2]
Evans was selected to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with his Irish Sport Horse Cooley Rorkes Drift. [3] This was Evans first time to make the Olympic team. The Irish team finished eighth in the three-day eventing competition, but Evans qualified for the individual eventing final. He finished ninth in the individual eventing competition.
In 2017 the owner of Cooley Rorkes Drift (Art) decided to sell him - which meant Jonty would have lost the horse. So Jonty set up a crowdfunding initiative to buy him. It was a massive success and on 9 August 2017, Jonty bought Cooley Rorkes Drift with the help of £500,000 raised by crowdfunding.
On 3 June 2018, during the cross-country portion of the Tattersalls event in Ireland, Evans suffered a serious brain injury from a fall. [4]
On 31 December 2020 the Low Pay Commission of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy revealed that "Mr Jonathan Evans, trading as Jonty Evans Equestrian Activities, Gloucester, failed to pay £5,008.16 to 5 workers" [5]
Mary Elizabeth King is a British equestrian who competes in eventing. She has represented Great Britain at six Olympics from 1992 to 2012, winning team silver in 2004 and 2012, and team bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, she won team gold in 1994 and 2010, and team silver in 2006. She has also won four team golds and one team bronze medal at the European Eventing Championships.
William Speed Lane Fox-Pitt is an English equestrian who competes in eventing. His career highlights include winning three Olympic medals in the team event, with silver in 2004 and 2012, and bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, he won team gold and individual silver in 2010, and team silver and individual bronze in 2014. He also won World team medals in 2002 and 2006. At the European Championships, he has won six team gold medals, as well as Individual silver in 1997 and 2005, and Individual bronze in 2013. He is the recordman CCI*****'s winner with 14 grand slam titles. In 2011, he became the first rider to win five different five-star events, having won the Burghley Horse Trials a record six times, Rolex Kentucky three times, Stars of Pau twice, the Badminton Horse Trials twice, and the Luhmühlen Horse Trials once (2008). A serious fall in 2015 left him in a coma for two weeks, but he came back to make the British eventing team and attend the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2018 Birthday Honours.

The team eventing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics is scheduled to take place from 30 July to 2 August 2021 at the Baji Koen and Sea Forest Cross-Country Course. Like all other equestrian events, the eventing competition is open-gender, with both male and female athletes competing in the same division. 45 riders from 15 nations are expected to compete.
