The Joplin Police Department (JPD) is the principal law enforcement agency responsible for serving the city of Joplin in the U.S. state of Missouri.The Joplin Police Department currently[ when? ] employs 112 Police Officers. The department maintains a fleet of Dodge Chargers and Chevy Tahoes.[ citation needed ] The Joplin Police Department is the largest law enforcement agency in Jasper County, Missouri.[ citation needed ]

Department structure and history

The Joplin Police Department was created in 1873, and is responsible for providing law enforcement services to a major population center in Southwest Missouri encompassing approximately 50,000 city residents and 200,000 daily visitors through its patrol, investigations, administration, special enforcement, and support services bureaus which report to the Chief of Police, and previously to the Police Marshal. [1] According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, 21 officers have been killed in the line of duty in the department's history. [2]

Officers are issued Glock pistols as their primary sidearm, in recent years JPD has upgraded to the 9mm Glock due to improved ballistics and the FBI going to 9mm.

As provided by Missouri State Statute 476.062, the Missouri State Marshals and Deputy Marshals are charged with the safety and security of State Courts, Judges, and staff and function as the law enforcement arm of the Missouri Judiciary. In addition to Supreme Court Marshals, Marshals are assigned to districts divided into Eastern, Western, Southern Missouri based out of St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield respectively. Marshals and Deputy Marshals are fully sworn and commissioned peace officers with statewide jurisdiction and are tasked with not only providing Courthouse security at the Supreme and Appellate Courts, but also for serving court orders and arrest warrants; as well as investigating crimes, including threats against Judges and Court employees. The Marshal of the Supreme Court of Missouri was the first state law enforcement official with statewide enforcement authority. Additionally, they can work with Judges and staff to do residential inspections, provide security to Judges away from the courthouse, protect visiting dignitaries, assist with information and cyber-security, as well as many other duties as assigned.

On January 13, 2019, George Robinson, a 62-year-old Black man, died two days after a violent arrest by three Black police officers in Jackson, Mississippi. According to a grand jury indictment, the officers pulled Robinson out of a car, threw him headfirst into the pavement, and struck and kicked him multiple times in the head and chest. Robinson was treated at the scene but within hours lost consciousness and later died at a hospital. The state coroner ruled the death a homicide.
