Jorge Andres Mejia (born October 27, 1972) is a Latin Grammy Award nominated [14] Colombian-born American composer, pianist, singer-songwriter and music industry executive as President & CEO at Sony Music Publishing for Latin America and U.S. Latin. [15] Mejia studied at the New World School of the Arts, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of Miami. [16]

Early life and education

Mejia was born October 27, 1972, in Bogota, Colombia, but grew up in Miami, Florida. Jorge studied piano performance first at the New World School of the Arts, then at the New England Conservatory of Music, eventually transferring to the University of Miami to earn his B.A. in piano performance. [17]

Professional

In 1997, Mejia joined Sony as an intern and rose steadily in the ranks to become President & CEO in 2019. [18] Mejia heads up Sony Music Publishing's Latin America and U.S. Latin divisions, which is the largest Latin publishing corporation in the world following Sony's merger with EMI Music Publishing in 2012. [19] Under Mejia's leadership, Sony Music Publishing Latin America and U.S. Latin divisions has won the so-called "Triple Crown" 2020, 2017 and 2016 by winning the ASCAP, SESAC and BMI "Publisher of the Year" awards, sweeping the award at the three major performing rights organizations' Latin award events. [20] [21] Mejia is a member of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame Board of Directors [22] and part of the Advisory Board at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. [23]

Music

Mejia is a classical pianist and composer as well as singer-songwriter and founder of the band, The Green Room. [24] He is a Steinway Artist. [25] Mejia's latest release, "If These Walls Could Talk," a composition for piano, was released in 2022 via Sony Music Latin. He recorded an orchestral version of this piano concerto in three movements with the London Symphony Orchestra in February 2024. [26]

His project, An Open Book: A Memoir in Music, consists of an eBook and orchestral recording, which was recorded with the University of Miami's Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and released via Sony Music Latin May 4, 2018. [27] Prelude in F Major for Piano and Orchestra from An Open Book: A Memoir in Music was nominated in the Best Classical Contemporary Composition category for the 19th annual Latin Grammy Awards. [28] El Nuevo Herald called An Open Book: A Memoir in Music "an instant classic...a rigorous and eclectic work." [29] Mejia's album of original solo classical piano pieces, Preludes, was released June 26, 2015. [30] Billboard called Mejia's Preludes "virtuoso, captivating pieces". [31]

Awards

Mejia was awarded the 2016 "Premio Editores Ralph S. Peer" from the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame for music publishing. [32] He was named as Billboard 's "40 Under 40" in 2012. Bagué has received multiple Latin Grammy Award nominations, and won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Album for his work with Jon Secada featuring The Charlie Sepúlveda Big Band on the recording To Beny Moré with Love. Bagué is also known for signing, developing and promoting Latin music artists internationally in his capacity as a vice president of US Latin East Coast and Puerto Rico for peermusic. Bagué has been with this independent, multi-national music publishing firm for nearly two decades.

The Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame (LSHOF) also known as La Musa Awards, was established on October 18, 2012, by Desmond Child and Rudy Pérez, and is located in Miami, Florida, United States. The hall of fame is dedicated to "educating, honoring and celebrating the lives and music of the world’s greatest Latin songwriters and composers". The hall of fame was conceived by Child after he realized that he was only the third Latino to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Pérez came up with the same idea after having discussions with Latin composers Manuel Alejandro and Armando Manzanero 16 years prior to its conception. Initially, the organization had only 119 participants which grew to over 15,000 members in two years from 21 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries across Latin America, Europe, and the US. Nominations for the inductions are selected by its committee of music professionals, which consists of producers, composers, musicians, and performers, with the winners being voted by the general public. The only exception was for the 2022 inductees. To be eligible for a nomination, the songwriter, composer, or lyricist is required to have their first published work released at least 20 years prior to the year of induction.

Jody Gerson is the Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group. Upon assuming the role on January 1, 2015, Gerson became the first female CEO of a major music publisher and first chairwoman of a global music company. Gerson also serves on the Executive Management Board for Universal Music Group.
