Joseph Branch (August 3,1817-November 23,1867),also referred to as Josephus Branch,was an American lawyer and politician who served as the first Florida Attorney General. [1] [2]
He was born in Enfield,North Carolina.
Branch is a member of the Branch family,being the nephew of North Carolina Governor John Branch (who also served as the last territorial Governor of Florida) and the brother of Confederate Army Brigadier General Lawrence O'Bryan Branch. [3]
Branch had been a lawyer in the city of Tallahassee in the Florida Territory in the 1830s and 1840s. In 1841 he served in the Territorial Legislature. Kenneth Bembry disputed his election. [4] [5] When Florida received statehood in 1845,Branch was appointed the first Florida Attorney General by Governor William Dunn Moseley. He served in this position until July 14,1846. [6]
Branch was twice married. With his first wife,Annie Pillow Martin,Branch had two children:George Martin and Henry Lewis. With his second wife,Mary Jones Polk,Branch had four children:Mary Polk,Lawrence O'Bryan,Lucia Eugenia,and Joseph Gerald Branch. The latter would go on to become a member of the Florida Legislature,as well as a successful planter in Desha County,Arkansas until his assassination in 1867 on his plantation. Richard Keith Call was an American attorney,politician,and slave owner who served as the 3rd and 5th territorial governor of Florida. Before that,he was elected to the Florida Territorial Council and as a delegate to the U.S. Congress from Florida. In the mid-1830s,he developed two plantations in Leon County,Florida,one of which was several thousand acres in size. In 1860 he held more than 120 slaves and was the third-largest slaveholder in the county. He was also a Southern Unionist opposed to Florida's secession during the American Civil War.

As chair of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee,Trammell was essential in the creation of several laws that revitalized the United States Navy. Francis Wayles Eppes was a planter and slave owner from Virginia who became a cotton planter in Florida Territory and later civic leader in Tallahassee and surrounding Leon County,Florida. After reaching legal age and marrying,Eppes operated the Poplar Forest plantation which his grandfather President Thomas Jefferson had established in Bedford County,Virginia,which he inherited. However,in 1829 he moved with his family to near Tallahassee,Florida. Long interested in education,in 1856 Eppes donated land and money to designate a school in Tallahassee as one of the first two state-supported seminaries,now known as Florida State University. He served as president of its board of trustees for eight years.
The Grove,known officially as the Call/Collins House at The Grove,is an antebellum plantation house located in Tallahassee,Leon County,Florida. Territorial Governor Richard Keith Call constructed The Grove circa 1840. By 1851,Call deeded the property to his daughter,Ellen Call Long,who owned it until 1903. Long's granddaughter,Reinette Long Hunt,acquired the property and owned it until her death in 1940. Hunt opened The Grove Hotel during this era and developed onsite cottages that served as rental properties. After a brief period under the ownership of John W. Ford and Josephine Agler,future Florida governor LeRoy Collins and his wife,Mary Call Darby Collins,a great-granddaughter of Richard Keith Call,bought The Grove.
