Joseph Lewis,Jr. is a judge on the Florida First District Court of Appeal.
Lewis was born in Tallahassee in 1953. He attended the University of Montana,graduating in 1974,and the Florida State University College of Law in 1977. [2] After graduation,he worked as a judicial research aide at the Florida Industrial Relations Commission from 1977 to 1978. [2] In 1978,he began working as an assistant public defender in the Second Judicial Circuit,a position he held until 1981. Starting in 1981,Lewis began working as an Assistant Attorney General in the Florida Attorney General's office. He specialized in civil and employment litigation,eventually becoming the Bureau Chief of the Employment Litigation and Civil Litigation Section. [3]
In August 2000,the Judicial Nominating Commission for the First District Court of Appeal sought applicants to replace Judges James Joanos and Arthur Lawrence,whose terms expired in January 2001. [1] Lewis applied for the seats,and on November 17,2000,Governor Jeb Bush announced that he was nominating Lewis to replace Judge Lawrence. [4] Following Lawrence's retirement two months later,Lewis was sworn in to the seat, [5] becoming the second African-American judge to serve on the court. [3]
In 2002,following Justice Leander Shaw's retirement from the Supreme Court of Florida,Lewis applied to fill the vacancy. [6] However,Governor Bush ended up selecting Kenneth B. Bell for the seat instead.
The district courts of appeal (DCAs) are the intermediate appellate courts of the Florida state court system. There are currently six DCAs:

During President Jimmy Carter's presidency,he nominated four people for four different federal appellate judgeships who were not processed by the Democratic-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee before Carter's presidency ended. None of the four nominees were renominated by Carter's successor,President Ronald Reagan. Three of the nominees who were not processed were nominated after July 1,1980,the traditional start date of the unofficial Thurmond Rule during a presidential election year. All four seats eventually were filled by appointees of President Ronald Reagan.

Previously,he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives,representing parts of western Orange County from April 2014 until his appointment to the bench. He served a prior stint in the Florida House from 2008 to 2012.
The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals is one of two appellate courts in the Alabama judicial system. The court was established in 1969 when what had been one unitary state Court of Appeals was broken into a criminal appeals court and a civil appeals court. The unitary Court of Appeals had been operative since 1911. The Court of Criminal Appeals is the linear descendant of the unitary Court of Appeals as its predecessor judges were automatically assigned to the Court of Criminal Appeals in 1969.
