Joseph M. Margiotta Distinguished Service Award

The Joseph M. Margiotta Distinguished Service Award is presented annually by Hofstra University in recognition of extraordinary dedication, generosity and service to the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and Hofstra Athletics. [1] The award is named for Joseph Margiotta, a Hofstra student-athlete and long-time supporter of the university. [2]

Margiotta founded the Hofstra Pride Club. [3] He served as its president for more than 20 years. [4] [5]

The James M. Shuart Stadium is an 11,929-seat multi-purpose stadium and sports facility, the facility serves as the home to Hofstra's lacrosse teams on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. First opened in 1963, and remodeled in 1996 and 2013, it was known as Hofstra Stadium until August 29, 2002, when it was renamed after the former president of Hofstra University, who played lacrosse and football during his undergraduate years at the school. The stadium grounds include James C. Metzger Hall which houses the stadium's press box, luxury suites and the Fried Center for Student-Athlete Development.

Giovanni Carmazzi is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Hofstra Pride, throwing for over 9,000 yards. He was selected by the 49ers in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Carmazzi spent the entirety of his NFL career as a backup, never appearing in a regular season game. After being released by the 49ers, he spent one season in NFL Europe and two seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Michael Anthony D'Amato was an American football defensive back. A safety, he played college football at Hofstra University, and played professionally in the American Football League (AFL) for the New York Jets in the 1968 season. That season, the Jets defeated the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship game, and went on to humble the heavily favored NFL champion Baltimore Colts in the third AFL-NFL World Championship game. He followed Jets center John Schmitt as the second Hofstra alumnus to play for the team. D'Amato was also Hofstra's Special Assistant to the President for Alumni Affairs.

The Hofstra Pride are composed of 17 teams representing Hofstra University in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women’s basketball, cross-country running, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis and track and field. Men’s sports include baseball and wrestling. Women’s sports include volleyball, field hockey, and softball. The Pride compete in the NCAA Division I and have been members of the Colonial Athletic Association in most sports since 2001. They were previously members of the America East Conference.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">James Metzger</span>

James C. Metzger is an American businessman and philanthropist. He is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of The Whitmore Agency, LLC a Long Island insurance brokerage and financial services firm that opened during 1989. Metzger is a former NCAA All-American college lacrosse player at Hofstra University and an multi-sport athlete at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills. His high school lacrosse jersey (#21) and university lacrosse jersey (#56) have been retired at both schools. His high school football jersey (#21) also has been retired.

The 2000 Hofstra Pride football team represented Hofstra University during the 2000 NCAA Division I-AA football season. It was the program's 60th season, and they competed as an Independent. The Pride earned a berth into the 16-team Division I-AA playoffs, but lost in the quarterfinals to eventual national champion Georgia Southern, 48–20. They finished #7 in the final national poll and were led by 11th-year head coach Joe Gardi.
